Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d), Mark Phillips has outlined a number of new and planned capital investments in renewable energy for 2025 and beyond that are set to reduce energy cost and transform the sector.
Addressing industry leaders, policymakers, and international stakeholders on day three of the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo, the Prime Minister highlighted Guyana’s transformational energy portfolio and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a sustainable, affordable, and modernised energy sector.
Amongst the new and planned capital investments are: the installation of 21 additional solar mini-grids over the next three years across Regions One, Three, Four, Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten; the development of four new mini-grid solar PV systems at Paramakatoi, Nappi, Awarewaunau, and Yupukari (a part of the hinterland electrification expansion); and a 0.6MW solar farm complemented by a 450-kilowatt wind turbine farm at Leguan- to ensure that 70 per cent of the island’s power demand is met sustainably.
Additionally, the Prime Minister noted that there will be an expansion of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, with 14 new EV charging stations being installed in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven and Ten, to support a low-carbon transportation agenda.
The Prime Minister linked these projects to the creation of thousands of jobs, from construction and engineering, to maintenance and technical innovation.
He reminded that the government is also committed to technical training, Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, and international knowledge exchange to equip Guyanese workers for careers in the expanding energy sector.
“Capacity building, training and public awareness have to be incorporated so that our citizens can actively participate in opportunities for job creation and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises… women, youth, and vulnerable groups will be encouraged to actively participate in these opportunities,” Phillips said.
He also stated that through strategic partnerships and innovation, Guyana aims to solidify its position as a leader in sustainable energy development.
The Prime Minister urged stakeholders to join forces in achieving Guyana’s vision of a globally competitive, low-carbon energy future.
“Our government remains committed to setting strong policies, fostering investment and ensuring that energy development aligns with national growth. Industry leaders and private investors will play a pivotal role in driving technological advancements and expanding clean energy infrastructure,” he said.
