Royal International Hotel and Restaurant today officially opened its doors, marking the newest addition to the country’s growing hospitality sector.

Prime Minister Brigadier Mark Phillips, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Oneidge Waldron, and Manager and Director Jason Wang had the honour of cutting the ribbon to the luxurious 200-room facility.

Wong told the gathering of government officials, business figures, and well-wishers that the journey of transformation had been challenging but not insurmountable.

He explained that when he first set eyes on the land where the hotel now stands, it was nothing but “bush and swamp land,” and some had declared it unusable, warning of security challenges.

Despite this, the Director said he was reminded that every achievement begins with a single step and the belief that anything is possible.

Today, the wholly Guyana-based facility has successfully delivered much-needed hospitality services while creating partnerships not only within the business community but also with those in the hotel’s surrounding area, to whom Wong expressed deep appreciation for their support.

In her congratulatory remarks, Minister Waldron said the hotel has contributed to the government’s drive to enhance the quality of the country’s room stock, as well as the initiative to establish more than 2,000 new rooms within its first term.

She noted that the Royal Hotel will play a vital role in accommodating the numerous visitors to the country, highlighting that last year alone saw a record number of visitors.

PM Phillips told the gathering that Guyana is experiencing economic expansion at a pace never seen before.

He emphasised the importance of ensuring that service sectors, including hospitality, keep pace with this growth.

The PM added that the government will continue to facilitate the establishment of businesses aimed at ensuring a successful and sustainable future.

He further mentioned that the government will continue to develop infrastructure that supports the growth of businesses and essential services.

Apart from the hotel, the Mandela Avenue establishment also houses a shopping mall, a gym, a food court, business retail stores, an adult gaming centre, movie theatres, a coffee shop, and a children’s fun park, among other facilities.
