The sod was turned on Tuesday for the construction of the Pegasus New Branded Hotel, a US$45 million investment that is expected to significantly boost Guyana’s tourism and hospitality industry.
This new addition, located near the iconic Pegasus Hotel, is expected to be completed by 2027.
President Dr Irfaan Ali, speaking at the sod-turning, highlighted the Pegasus Hotel’s crucial role in the country’s hospitality sector, noting its 50-plus years of history as a household name since its inception in 1969.
The Pegasus has been a trailblazer in setting international hospitality standards in Guyana, attracting guests from around the world.
President Ali praised Mr Robert Badal, CEO of Pegasus Hotels, and his family for their continued faith in the country’s growth. He lauded their bold investment and emphasised that their contributions are vital to the expansion and diversification of Guyana’s economy.
“I want to really congratulate Mr Badal, his wife, and their family for their faith and belief in Guyana… in this government… in our economy,” President Ali stated.
He added: “For the confidence that they have shown in making yet another bold investment in our country… He is also making significant investments in the diversification and expansion of our economy.”
The New Branded Hotel will serve as a bridge between the past and the future, with a portion of the existing Pegasus Poolside and Grand Savannah Suite being demolished to make way for the new development. The hotel will include 170 executive rooms, a third-floor gym, a 13th-floor executive lounge, and a luxurious penthouse offering breathtaking views of the city skyline.
CEO Robert Badal spoke about Guyana’s rapid economic growth, particularly within the oil and gas sector, and its increasing appeal to investors. Despite challenges such as skilled labour shortages and financing hurdles, he reaffirmed the private sector’s commitment to contributing to the country’s economic development.
Badal’s US$45 million investment in the New Branded Hotel follows his previous US$100 million investment in the Pegasus luxury suite and corporate centre, also located within the Pegasus compound.
