Hundreds of residents from Mocha/Arcadia, Perseverance, and Prosperity received a much-needed financial boost on Wednesday, as they collected their $100,000 cash grant.
For many, the support could not have come at a better time.
Christopher Samaroo, one of the recipients who collected his cheque at the Mocha Community Centre, described the grant as a “pretty good incentive” that will help ease the financial strain on his household.
“A lot of people don’t work for this amount monthly, so I can see how this can assist quite well,” Samaroo shared.
He plans to invest the funds in obtaining professional certificates to advance his career ambitions.
At the Mocha Health Centre, Lashana Guliver expressed her gratitude, highlighting the positive impact the grant would have on the lives of Guyanese.
“It is good and it is going to help a lot of us. This is too much for me, but I am going to make sure I spend it wisely,” said Guliver, a single mother who plans to stretch the funds to meet her family’s needs.
Tracy Thornhill, another recipient, spoke about the daily challenges faced by many Guyanese and how this grant would provide some relief. Urlina Ramjit echoed similar sentiments, calling the initiative a timely intervention.
“We have to be thankful for what we are getting, and I hope they [the government] can do even more for us,” Ramjit told the Department of Public Information (DPI).
Senior citizen Patricia Williams already has plans for her grant — she intends to use the money to purchase zinc sheets for her home renovation project.
“I am doing over my house in concrete, and it will help me buy the zinc sheets for the verandah,” she explained.
Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Public Affairs, Kwame McCoy, was present at the distribution sites, ensuring the smooth flow of the process.
He assured residents that the distribution exercise would continue until every eligible individual received their benefit.
The $100,000 cash grant distribution, which commenced in Region Four on Monday, will continue at additional centres along the East Bank and East Coast of Demerara and in Georgetown this week.
Earlier this month, the National Assembly approved an allocation of over $40 billion to support the initiative, aimed at easing financial hardships and supporting the well-being of Guyanese families.
