Increased job opportunities in Guyana’s growing oil economy are a primary reason employees can easily transition between public and private sector jobs, according to Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance and Public Service, Dr Ashni Singh.

He made this statement while responding to questions from Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) Tabitha Sarabo-Halley during a Parliamentary sitting today. He observed that public servants were leaving for jobs in the private sector.

Dr. Ashni Singh also informed the House that 2,832 persons had resigned from public sector jobs between August 2020 and December 2024.

However, he added: “What that has meant is that all citizens of Guyana now have a wider array of employment opportunities than at any other time in our country’s history.”

The minister continued: “There are more employment opportunities today than at any other time in our country’s history, and that has clear implications for labour mobility. People are now able, as they should be, to explore the full range of opportunities and pursue those that best suit them.”

Minister Singh emphasised that the government is very pleased with the progress made in this area.

“As a government, we are pleased with our success in creating more employment opportunities, ensuring that every Guyanese citizen has a wider array of choices regarding productive activities, employment, and entrepreneurial ventures. We see this as a resoundingly positive development,” he said.
