The government is actively advancing and supporting strategies in e-medicine and telemedicine as part of its efforts to fully integrate Guyana into the international healthcare system.

E-medicine involves the use of electronic information and communication technologies in healthcare, including electronic health records and telemedicine.

According to President Dr Irfaan Ali, in a live Facebook broadcast on Thursday, the government is working towards achieving a world-class healthcare system that will elevate local doctors and specialists to international standards.

“We want to, as we’ve said in the manifesto, develop a healthcare system that is second to none—a healthcare system that is world-class, and that healthcare system is not only about the public healthcare system,” the President stated.

“It is about how we integrate the private healthcare system. How do we ensure that we not only incentivise private healthcare—which we have already done—but also integrate the management of public and private healthcare? How do we develop a shared platform for human capacity and capability? Additionally, how do we implement our national health strategy, which aims to provide every citizen with a basic, equitable level of healthcare across the board?” he continued.

According to President Ali, the government is aggressively pursuing this initiative and is currently in discussions with Northwell Health in the United States to develop an information-sharing platform. This platform will be part of the health information system and will also function as a human resource and specialty platform.

The goal is to integrate specialists from Guyana’s healthcare system with those from Northwell, enabling local doctors to access reference support.

“This is already happening through telemedicine and e-medicine—how they can be part of the infrastructure that supports our healthcare system,” the President said.

Additionally, the government is working with Hess Corporation on expanding an agreement with Mount Sinai, which plays a key role in strengthening Guyana’s healthcare system.

President Ali further emphasised that the government is advancing several key healthcare initiatives.

“We are working on building a platform that integrates our capacity and capability in both the private and public sectors, supporting the development of this modern, world-class healthcare system. That is why we are partnering with the best—so that our telemedicine programme can be a global one that aligns with leading health institutions. That process has already begun,” he disclosed.
