Couple arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm, ammunition

A 48-year-old Guyanese businesswoman and her 41-year-old Venezuelan husband, both residents of Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, were arrested by police ranks from Regional Division Three after being found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol and six matching rounds of ammunition.

Acting on received information, a team of police officers, led by an Assistant Superintendent, visited the couple’s residence at Lot 65, Vergenoegen, earlier today.

According to a police release, upon arrival, they met the woman, identified as Latchmin.

One of the officers informed her of the reason for their visit, and she consented to a search of the premises.

During the search, conducted in the presence of both Latchmin and her husband, Wiollian Rivero, a Venezuelan national, the officers discovered a bulky plastic bag on top of a wardrobe in a bedroom.

Upon opening the bag in their presence, the officers found a 9mm pistol along with six matching rounds of ammunition.

Both Latchmin and Wiollian were immediately informed of the offense and cautioned.

In response, Latchmin reportedly stated, “Officer, I gave a boy an ounce of gold, and he gave me the gun until he repays me.” Her husband, however, denied any knowledge of the firearm or ammunition.

The couple was arrested and escorted to the Leonora Police Station, along with the seized firearm and ammunition.

They remain in custody as investigations continue.
