President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening Guyana’s transportation network, announcing efforts to expand ferry services to meet growing economic demands.
Speaking at a recent event, President Ali revealed that the government is working with a team of technicians and specialists to procure a new ferry for the Essequibo region. The vessel is expected to accommodate more passengers and vehicles, enhancing connectivity between Essequibo and other regions.
Additionally, the president disclosed that plans are underway to acquire another ferry for the Northwest route. This follows the successful commissioning of the MV Ma Lisha in 2023, a partnership with the Government of India that significantly improved transportation, trade, and tourism between Georgetown and the North West District.
“Since we launched that service, production has increased, the market has grown, and demand for the ferry has risen exponentially—now we need another one,” President Ali stated.
To advance this initiative, Cabinet has tasked a team of engineers with assessing and providing an estimated cost for the new ferry.
The investment in ferry services aligns with the government’s broader strategy to enhance infrastructure, boost economic activity, and improve regional connectivity across Guyana.
