GDF urged to be “vigilant” ahead of 2025 polls

President Dr. Mohamed Ali has called on the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to remain vigilant against any attempts to disrupt the smooth conduct of the 2025 elections.

Speaking at the GDF’s Annual Officers’ Conference today, President Ali emphasised that the Force must be prepared to fulfill its constitutional duty by supporting civilian law enforcement in maintaining peace, order, and democracy.

While the government does not anticipate unrest or any threats to the rule of law, the President stressed, “We must remain vigilant against any attempt to unsettle internal order.”

He noted that the Defence Force must be on standby and ready to act if necessary to uphold stability and protect the democratic process.

“We are not asking anyone to take a partisan stand; we ask every day for the members of the Joint Services to take professional and national stands,” he stated.

President Ali reaffirmed that every member of the Force has the right to vote according to their conscience, and as Commander-in-Chief, he will ensure that this right is respected.

He further underscored that the GDF’s duty is to national security and the preservation of law and order—not to any political interest.

“The country’s democracy depends on free, fair, and peaceful elections, and we will ensure that no force, internal or external, disrupts the will of the people,” he declared.
