Guyana’s Civil Aviation Training School (CATS) is now certified to train individuals from around the world in aviation, having recently received accreditation from TRAINAIR, a global training programme under the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill is leading a delegation from Guyana to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to receive the official instrument of certification while attending the Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS).

Minister Edghill stated that with this accreditation, the training school will now be able to train not only Guyanese but also individuals from the Caribbean and other countries.

He noted that the certification is also expected to generate revenue for the country, as trainees from abroad will pay for courses.

This marks a significant milestone for the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), which has been working to rebuild its financial reserves after inheriting a deficit. The authority had previously lost a financial reserve of over GYD 1 billion.

An ICAO assessment team recently visited Guyana to evaluate the Civil Aviation Training School before granting it TRAINAIR Plus certification. CATS, an Approved Aviation Training Organisation, is certified by both the GCAA regulatory body and the Guyana National Accreditation Council.

The ICAO assessment ensured that Guyana’s training facilities and operations meet international standards to conduct ICAO-approved courses across various aviation disciplines.

The TRAINAIR Plus accreditation will also enable the country to develop its own ICAO-approved training courses, which can be shared with TRAINAIR Plus members globally. Minister Edghill indicated that this achievement positions Guyana as a key player in the global aviation sector, with expectations of further growth and international recognition.
