More than 200 families in Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, took a significant step toward homeownership during a recent lot identification exercise conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Water.

The exercise was part of the government’s wider commitment to its goal of distributing 50,000 house lots by the end of 2025, a target that is likely to exceed.

According to the ministry’s  Public Relations Department, the Stewartville exercise is among the largest undertaken by the ministry. For many families, some of whom had been waiting for over a decade, the opportunity of owning a plot of land is a positive turning point in their lives.

Among the beneficiaries was Janine Anthony. “I am very happy to finally get to see the land, I paid for it almost three years ago. This is something really nice, I’ll be leaving something for my children to inherit and I hope to start building as soon as possible,” she said.

Ray Sparman, who applied for a house lot in 2009, shared a similar sentiment. He and his wife were visibly overjoyed as they identified their allocated plot.

“I wanna take this opportunity to say thank you to the ministry for finally allowing myself and my wife  to gain the opportunity of achieving  a land. We applied since 2009 and today we are happy that we are now land owners, and we are very grateful for achieving this land after so many years of applying and we want to have a special family home built here.”

The government in this year’s budget has allocated $135.7 billion to the Ministry of Housing and Water. Through ongoing initiatives like the Stewartville exercise, the government continues to prioritise improving the quality of life for its citizens by making homeownership attainable.
