President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Vice-President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo on Tuesday engaged landscapers as the government prepares to embark on a large-scale beautification initiative.

This transformative project aims to enhance public spaces with lush greenery and vibrant floral displays, reflecting the country’s commitment to environmental sustainability and cultural heritage.

According to President Ali, the initiative will extend beyond Georgetown, encompassing communities across the country. Plans include the planting of trees and flowers along newly developed highways, in public parks, and within the premises of new schools and hospitals.

The government envisions a greener, more aesthetically pleasing Guyana, with 50,000 flowering and exotic plants and trees being strategically placed along the coastland and in the Capital City over the next five to seven years.

This ambitious programme is being spearheaded by the Protected Areas Commission (PAC) in collaboration with key government agencies, including the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC), the Ministry of Public Works, and the National Agriculture, Research and Extension Institute (NAREI).

President Ali underscored that this initiative is more than just an environmental effort — it is a reflection of the nation’s cultural identity, symbolising growth, sustainability, and national pride.

Also present at the discussions were Foreign Secretary and Chair of the Protected Areas Commission’s Board, Robert Persaud and Head of the Protected Areas Commission, Damian Fernandes, and their respective teams, who are actively involved in the planning and execution of this nationwide beautification effort.
