As part of the Ministry of Home Affairs initiatives to improve security domestically, the Customs Anti-narcotics Unit (CANU) has completed a five day advantaged drone training program for law enforcement personnel and environmental agencies.
The program, which began on January 27, is being held at the Parc Rayne Events Centre in Houston and brings together 13 representatives from CANU, the Guyana Prison Service, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). A statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs noted that the initiative was part of a collaborative effort to enhance national security and operational efficiency.
Home Affairs Minister, Robeson Benn, emphasised the transformative role of drone technology in modernising national security operations and highlighted its usefulness in the local security sector. “We must optimise the use of technology to ensure greater efficiency and safety in our responses,” Minister Benn stated. He stressed the importance of continuous training and inter-agency collaboration to maximise the potential of these advancements.
Minister Benn also highlighted the critical role of cooperation in effectively utilising technology stating that, “The development and application of these technologies are essential for ensuring peace, safety, and an enhanced quality of life for all citizens.”
The training, facilitated by Caliper Drone Services, combined theoretical knowledge with practical hands-on -experience. Participants will be trained in areas relating to drone Rules and Regulations, types and Applications of UAVs, Emergency Response Protocols, DJI GO App Operations and Basic Takeoff, Landing, and Manoeuvring Techniques.
Director of CANU, Mr. James Singh, underscored the strategic importance of integrating advanced technology to safeguard Guyana’s borders and improve coordination among agencies. “This training is aligned with the Ministry’s broader strategy of fostering inter-agency collaboration, not only within Guyana but also with our counterparts in Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil, and beyond. It’s about creating a unified response to shared threats,” Singh explained.
He urged participants to apply the knowledge gained during the program in their daily operations. “We are the custodians of our territory, and this training represents a vital step in ensuring we can fulfil our responsibilities effectively,” Mr. Singh added.
Technical Director of Caliper Drone Services, Mr. Julian Cadogan, elaborated on the comprehensive nature of the training. “Participants will not only master drone mechanics but also learn to manage emergencies, such as low battery or signal loss. The training ensures they are equipped to conduct safe and efficient operations, whether in law enforcement, environmental monitoring, or emergency response scenarios,” the director explained. In addition, participants are being introduced to advanced drone features, such as thermal imaging for nighttime operations, high-resolution cameras for vehicle tracking, and specialised software for mapping and data collection.
These tools are expected to significantly enhance operational capabilities in areas like prison security, environmental protection, and firefighting. The Ministry of Home Affairs said it remains committed to fostering innovation and collaboration across agencies to ensure a safer and more secure Guyana.
