Talks on deepening strategic cooperation between Guyana and the United Kingdom were held on Thursday alongside a tour of the UK-backed US$65.5 million Terminal 2 project at Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance Dr Ashni Singh welcomed visiting UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband for bilateral discussions on advancing the longstanding partnership between both countries. Singh was joined by Foreign Affairs Minister Hugh Todd and Public Utilities and Aviation Minister Deodat Indar.

Before the talks, Singh and Indar toured the terminal site with Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Chief Executive Officer Ramesh Ghir. Miliband was accompanied by His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Latin America and the Caribbean Amy Barklam, UK Export Finance (UKEF) Chief Executive Officer Tim Reid, British High Commissioner to Guyana Joseph Fisher and others.

Terminal 2 is supported by UKEF and is being built by UK firm Mowlem International (UK) Limited, formerly BHM Construction International (UK) Limited. Once completed, the project will ease arrival congestion, separate arriving and departing passengers, reduce departure congestion and add space for duty-free shops, restaurants and other amenities.

The project follows a ground-breaking ceremony in August 2025, when President Dr Irfaan Ali turned the sod and described the terminal as the start of a larger vision to make Guyana a global aviation hub.

The expansion also comes as visitor numbers climb. Total arrivals reached 453,489 in 2025, the highest level ever recorded. In his 2026 Budget speech, Singh said the country’s rapid economic growth and promotion as a tourist destination had produced unprecedented visitor numbers, creating the need to expand CJIA.

“Looking forward, within this term, Government will construct a new arrivals terminal at the CJIA, as we continue its modernisation to meet international standards and position it to become a regional transport hub with in-transit capabilities,” the minister said.

He added that the growth had also driven plans for wider improvements.

“This has driven the need to expand the CJIA, establish new municipal airports, and upgrade our hinterland airstrips as we strive to continue our ambitious programme to improve national and international air connectivity.”

Two-year-old Larissa Kissoon, who once had up to 100 seizures a day, is now seizure-free after starting treatment in India, her mother said, as the family appeals for financial help.

The family, however, is still struggling to cover the cost of her ongoing treatment and additional medical expenses.

Her mother, Juliann Pereira, said the family travelled to India on October 15, and Kissoon began treatment at Artemis Hospital. Since then, she has seen a significant reduction in the seizures that once affected her daughter throughout the day.

“Everybody feel happy that Larissa is finally not doing no seizure because she had a lot of pain,” Pereira said, describing the relief the family feels at the improvement.

While the treatment has brought encouraging changes, Kissoon continues to face developmental challenges. Pereira said doctors have identified developmental delays and brain damage, and have explained that they cannot predict how much progress she will make.

To support her development, Kissoon is expected to begin physiotherapy after completing a 15-day course of medication. Her mother said further care is needed to address her physical challenges.

Kissoon was diagnosed with West syndrome at two months old, after her parents rushed her to the Georgetown Public Hospital because she had cried uncontrollably through the night.

Pereira previously told Ignite News that the family was struggling to raise funds for specialised treatment abroad, estimated at US$10,000 excluding travel, accommodation, food and other expenses. At the time, the family had raised $1 million.

Despite the progress, the family continues to face financial pressure as it works to meet those costs. Pereira said a donation promised by an organisation has not yet been received.

Persons wishing to assist can send contributions through MMG to Juliann Pereira at 652-1067.

The High Court’s decision to uphold the detention of Police Constable Ryan Greene, accused of receiving a bribe over the unauthorised release of CCTV footage,…

The High Court’s decision to uphold the detention of Police Constable Ryan Greene, accused of receiving a bribe over the unauthorised release of CCTV footage, was fair, the Attorney General has said.

Attorney General Anil Nandlall told reporters at the High Court on Thursday that keeping Greene in custody would allow police to complete their investigations, citing national security concerns.

Greene is accused of receiving a bribe from Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed. High Court Judge Christel Lambert ordered the release of Greene’s mother, Nikita Greene, but ruled that the constable’s arrest and detention were not unlawful.

“I think the ruling was a fair one. I believe that the police nearby now would have concluded their investigation in relation to the mother because her role is quite limited,” Nandlall said.

He warned that the alleged unauthorised extraction and distribution of footage from the Safe City camera system could jeopardise national security and public safety.
Nandlall explained that the system captures images of people across the country, including judicial officers, military personnel, the President and ministers, and could expose their movements and whereabouts if the recordings fell into the wrong hands.

“The unauthorised downloading, disposal of images generated by that system can grind this country to a halt. It can push us into a national emergency,” he said.
Nandlall alleged that Mohamed was implicated in obtaining images extracted from the system without authorisation for use in a personal criminal matter. The allegations have not been established in court.

He said investigators were also examining the possible involvement of other persons and whether similar breaches had occurred previously.
“We don’t know whether this is the first time that such a breach has occurred. We don’t know,” he said.

Nandlall insisted the implications extended beyond those involved and that the integrity of the surveillance system must be protected.
He added that police would need legal advice on the mother’s alleged role, noting that receiving proceeds of crime can constitute an offence under the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Act.

Amid glowing diyas, graceful dances and traditional sweetmeats, Deep Jale 2026 welcomed Diwali to Berbice on Wednesday evening, as Hindus were urged to let light dispel darkness and cherish traditions that have united generations.

The call came from Human Services and Social Security Minister Dr Vindhya Persaud, who is also President of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, at the Palmyra Indian Monument Site.

Reflecting on the spiritual significance of the festival, she said: “It is a recognition of how as a person, we should allow the positives within ourselves to triumph over the negative. We should let light dispel darkness and at all times, we should ensure that there is wisdom and knowledge in every decision that we make.”

Organised annually by the Sabha through its East Berbice Praants, Deep Jale brings together culture, spirituality and celebration. This year’s event also featured festive bazaars.

Dr Persaud said Diwali reflects the country’s cultural and religious diversity, promoting unity, understanding and respect. She singled out the Diwali motorcade tradition.

“The fact that we’ve maintained Diwali motorcades for over 50 years is a very, very wonderful tribute to the vision of Pandit Ripudaman Prasad for starting it,” she said.
She commended the young people and senior members of the community who dedicate hours to preparing the illuminated displays, saying the motorcades showcase the country’s cultural heritage to Guyanese and the world while bringing families together in an atmosphere of spirituality, love and fraternity.

To keep these traditions alive, Dr Persaud urged Hindu parents to involve their children in religious and cultural activities leading up to Diwali, including attending the mandir and taking part in community celebrations.

“Culture, tradition and dharma can only be sustained, if you play an integral role in all of this,” she said.

She also encouraged families to observe Mahalakshmi Puja at home before lighting their diyas on Diwali night.

Diwali will be celebrated across Guyana on November 8, with religious observances, cultural activities and traditional motorcades planned nationwide.

Agriculture science is set to become compulsory for students from Grades Seven to Eleven in secondary schools across Guyana, as the education system places greater emphasis on practical, hands-on learning and entrepreneurship.

Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain announced the plan at Agri-Value 2026, a student-led symposium showcasing agricultural innovation, entrepreneurship and agro-processing.

Hussain said all secondary schools would also be required to participate in the annual event, which allows students to demonstrate how locally grown crops can be transformed into marketable products.

He outlined a collaborative approach in which agriculture students grow crops, home economics students process them, business students handle marketing and sales, and English departments assist with developing advertisements.

The approach, he said, would help students apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations while developing practical skills and entrepreneurial opportunities.
Hussain also highlighted the need for schools to make better use of agricultural facilities and equipment, noting that resources provided to some institutions had not always been used effectively.

Agri-Value 2026 brought together students from 22 secondary schools to showcase value-added products developed under the supervision of teachers.

Chief Planning Officer Mischka White-Griffith also emphasised the importance of practical education, noting that agriculture science integrates several disciplines, including mathematics, science and business.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to encourage young people to view agriculture as more than an academic subject, positioning the sector as a potential source of entrepreneurship, employment and economic development.

A 36-year-old police inspector has been placed under close arrest over the alleged assault of his 14-year-old son.

Police are investigating the matter as assault causing actual bodily harm. Preliminary investigations showed the inspector allegedly threw a hammer at the teenager earlier this month, striking his left ankle, after the boy reportedly misplaced a key.

Further enquiries disclosed that about 7:30am on Wednesday, the inspector allegedly became angry after the teenager failed to complete his household chores. He reportedly locked the boy in a bedroom and beat him about the body with an electrical extension cord, injuring him.

The matter was reported to the Childcare and Protection Agency, which launched an investigation. The teenager was interviewed by the relevant authorities and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where a doctor examined him.

Police ranks later visited the location. The inspector was placed under close arrest on Wednesday, pending investigations, which are ongoing.

Bangladesh fought back with three late wickets but West Indies held the edge when rain and bad light brought an early end to the second day’s play in Mirpur. After bowling out Bangladesh for 272, West Indies reached 134 for 4, trailing the hosts by 138 runs.

West Indies were propped up by left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican’s 5 for 53 and later John Campbell’s half-century but Taijul Islam’s twin strikes got Bangladesh back in the contest.

Shortly after the rain break in the final session, Mehidy got the set Campbell with a fine delivery, but Najmul Hossain Shanto’s excellent reflex catch was the bigger talking point. The opener poked at a delivery slanted across him and got a thick outside edge to slip, where the Bangladesh captain leapt to his left and grabbed a stunner. It was the breakthrough Bangladesh were looking for, after Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul had added 61 runs for the second wicket.

Taijul then struck twice in the same over. Mominul Haque, fielding at silly mid-off, bent really low to intercept Kavem Hodge’s defensive push, and then Amir Jangoo swung one down to deep square-leg where Tanzid Hasan took a simple catch. West Indies slipped from 90 for 1 to 97 for 4, giving away a strong start.

But Chanderpaul and Justin Greaves held the innings together, adding an unbroken 37-run stand before umpires called off play around 4:35pm local time. Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 43 with six fours while Greaves reached 15 off 22 balls.

The day was also all about Bangladesh’s implosion in the morning session, when they lost their last five wickets for only 19 runs as they slipped from 253 to 5 to be bowled out for 272. They scored just 59 runs and lost seven wickets in the opening session after resuming the second day on a comfortable 213 for 3. Left-arm spinners Warrican and debutant Joshua Bishop formed an unlikely partnership, picking up seven Bangladesh wickets.

Bishop started the slide with Shadman Islam’s wicket, shortly after the left-hander reached his third Test century. Towhid Hridoy lasted two balls in the morning session, after he returned to the crease after retiring hurt on the first evening. Hridoy played a poor shot to Bishop’s full ball, slamming into his stumps.

Warrican then got one to spin through Mehidy’s defensive press, before Shamar Joseph took the wickets of Nayeem and Mahmud in quick succession. The innings ended when Warrican removed Taijul Islam and Shoriful off successive balls, as Bangladesh collapsed in a heap.

West Indies started their reply with a few boundaries but also had the rub of the green going their way. Campbell had two lives, first on 5 when Nayeem Hasan dropped him at point and then on 22, when Shoriful Islam missed a return catch.

Brandon King fell to a Hasan Mahmud delivery that wobbled away from him, with substitute wicketkeeper Jaker Ali doing the rest.

Campbell drove the ball at most opportunities, while Chanderpaul struck a couple of early fours in his innings. Shortly after Campbell struck Mehidy for a six and a four off successive deliveries, bad light forced an early end to the second session. (Cricinfo)

Households and businesses could store solar power for use during outages under a new battery system launched by ENet, EcoFlow and TechPro, part of a push to reach about 10,000 homes.

Speaking at the launch of the EcoFlow OCEAN Pro Solar Battery System on Wednesday, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips said the Government welcomes the initiative as part of its commitment to private-sector participation in developing a more reliable, affordable and diversified energy sector.

“The Government of Guyana welcomes ENet’s stated ambition to support the rollout of 50 megawatts of solar capacity through grid-tied and off-grid installations, with the aim of reaching approximately 10,000 households across Guyana,” he said.

Phillips noted, though, that the target would depend on sustained investment and consumer confidence, as expanding residential and commercial developments continue to raise electricity demand. To meet that demand, he said, the Government is investing in additional generating capacity, solar energy, hydropower and electricity infrastructure, and encouraging private-sector contributions to the energy transition.

Referencing the Low Carbon Development Strategy, he said: “We intend to use our resources to improve lives while continuing to invest in cleaner power sources. Partnerships like the one represented here today can help achieve that objective.”

Phillips also highlighted the Guyana Power and Light’s net-billing programme, which allows eligible customers with approved grid-tied solar systems to export excess electricity to the national grid and receive credits on their bills, subject to technical and safety requirements.

On affordability, he welcomed ENet’s talks with financial institutions on options that could include adding solar installation costs to existing mortgages.

Beyond financing, Phillips urged the partners to train Guyanese technicians and strengthen customer support to build local expertise and consumer confidence. He also acknowledged ENet’s new digital platform, which helps customers assess their electricity consumption, determine suitable system sizes and obtain estimated pricing.

Phillips reiterated that the Government remains committed to practical energy solutions that meet the needs of the growing economy.

From 25 loans worth $135,000 in 1986, the Institute of Private Enterprise Development (IPED) now serves more than 5,000 clients, with a loan portfolio above $6 billion.

IPED Chief Executive Officer Jagdesh Haripershad shared the milestone at the World Trade Centre Georgetown’s recent Trade and Business Conference. The institution began with about $1 million in initial funding, he noted, and its first loans averaged about $5,000 per client.

That growth reflects IPED’s role in financing entrepreneurs and small businesses, including those that may struggle to access traditional banking services.
“It is an excellent example of how an institution can grow from very humble beginnings,” Haripershad said, reflecting on four decades of development.
Success, however, did not come quickly.

“This growth did not happen overnight and required some management discipline, perseverance and the confidence to adapt to changing circumstances,” he said.
Beyond lending, Haripershad said IPED helps entrepreneurs build the skills to manage and sustain their businesses through business development, financial education, training and partnerships.

Money alone, he added, does not build a lasting enterprise. Entrepreneurs must also understand their markets, manage cash flow, control costs and ensure borrowed funds are used effectively.

He urged business owners to tell sales, profits and cash flow apart, warning that even a profitable business can run into difficulty if it lacks enough cash to meet its obligations.

Allottees at the Providence-Glasgow housing development, East Bank Berbice, could begin identifying their lots before the end of November, with surveying expected to start by mid-November.

Housing Minister Collin Croal said on Wednesday, during a visit to assess infrastructure works at the site in Region Six, that the Ministry is working to complete the necessary preparations within two weeks.

He said the development spans more than 650 acres, with about $9.3 billion being invested in infrastructure. Seventeen lots have been awarded to contractors, but three are behind schedule.

“So it therefore means 14 of those we can now, the survey department will proceed to start putting the polls,” Croal said.

He said the works would address concerns from residents who have been waiting to see their allocated lands, adding that the Ministry is aware of questions from beneficiaries in Berbice about when they can access their lots.

“Persons who have been allocated here will be able to have access and be shown their lot before November month of end,” he said, referring to the areas progressing as planned.

After surveying, the development is expected to receive additional services, including electricity and the drilling of wells in several areas across Berbice, similar to initiatives elsewhere in the country.

For breast cancer survivor Simone Morgan, the decision to get screened was driven by a painful family history of cancer and a determination to avoid the fate that claimed the lives of three of her relatives.

After noticing a change in the appearance of her breast, Morgan decided to seek medical attention, despite feeling nervous about the screening process.
The experience, she recalled, became easier with the reassurance and guidance of the technician who attended to her, reinforcing the importance of taking that first step towards protecting her health.

Morgan’s decision was shaped by memories of losing her grandmother, great-aunt and uncle after their cancer was detected too late for treatment to be effective.

“Coming from a family of cancer, knowing it was very late for my grandmother, my great-aunt and my uncle, it was very sad to see the way they died. The treatment for them was too late, and I don’t want that for myself, my kids and my grandkids and any other woman going through that,” she said in a One Communications Facebook post.

Having experienced the consequences of late diagnosis within her own family, Morgan is now urging women who may be postponing mammograms to prioritise their health and seek screening as early as possible.

“Any woman out there who’s delaying their mammogram, you should go and get your test as early as possible,” she urged.
Her appeal comes as the Ministry of Health intensifies efforts to improve breast cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment through a newly launched Action Plan for Breast Cancer Management in Guyana.

The plan aims to strengthen coordination among radiology, pathology, surgery, oncology and primary healthcare services, while improving referral systems, patient navigation and follow-up to reduce delays in care.

Delivering the feature address at the launch, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony underscored the importance of improved screening, early diagnosis, expanded treatment services and greater collaboration among healthcare providers.

For Dr Shanique Greaves, Coordinator of Cancer Services in the Ministry of Health’s Chronic Disease Unit, one of the most important messages women need to understand is that screening should not be reserved for those who already feel unwell.

“Screening is not for people who are sick. It is for healthy people, people who feel fine,” she said, explaining that the absence of symptoms does not necessarily mean a person is free of disease.

Dr Greaves stressed that early detection can improve treatment options, reduce costs and support faster recovery, while late diagnosis can limit available treatments and make successful management more difficult.

“Frankly, I think early detection is a matter of life and death,” she said.

She also cautioned women against waiting until they notice a lump or abnormal discharge before seeking medical advice, emphasising that screening can help identify disease before symptoms become apparent.

“Because early is easy, late is hard,” she said.

As part of efforts to expand access, the Ministry introduced mammography machines in Regions Two, Six, Nine and Ten in 2025, extending services beyond Region Four. Women aged 40 and older are encouraged to access screening, which Dr Greaves said is available free of charge.

Women seeking guidance on screening can visit their nearest health centre for information on accessing the service.

The urgency of these efforts is underscored by figures from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s Oncology Department, which recorded 147 breast cancer cases in 2025 and another 107 between January and August 2026.

Medical Registrar in the department, Dr Alina Gutierrez, said the oncology service sees at least 15 new cancer cases each week.

Against this backdrop, the new action plan seeks to improve access to timely, coordinated and compassionate care for women across Guyana.

Motorists with unpaid traffic tickets could be barred from renewing vehicle documents and driver’s licences, with more than 39,000 tickets outstanding.

Attorney General Anil Nandlall, SC, said on his Issues in the News programme that measures are being put in place to address the backlog.

He cited figures from Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh showing the Guyana Police Force issued 88,332 tickets, of which 49,326 were paid. That means 56 per cent were settled and 44 per cent remain unpaid.

Nandlall said vehicles with unpaid tickets could be denied renewal of road licences and certificates of fitness, while people named on tickets could be prevented from renewing their driver’s licences.

“So unpaid tickets will not go without consequences,” he said.

He added that he had discussed with the Traffic Chief widening the category of offences that can be dealt with by ticket. He urged police officers to issue tickets instead of detaining motorists and their vehicles where a ticket can adequately address the alleged offence.

Nandlall warned that officers who unlawfully detain people or their vehicles commit a criminal offence and a civil wrong, and are “liable to be sued and charged.”

Likud has emerged as the largest single party in Israel’s election, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faring better than widely predicted as results continue to come in.

His existing bloc with ultra-nationalist and ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties appears to be just short of a 61-seat majority in the 120-seat parliament. However, analysts caution that this is subject to change because the early count was skewed towards areas known to have strong right-wing support.

A dramatic deadlock had been widely forecast as Israelis surged to the polls – with turnout reaching more than 77 per cent.

In Israel’s fragmented political system, the signs are that Netanyahu’s main rival, former army chief Gadi Eisenkot, would struggle to command a parliamentary majority without parties led by Israel’s Arab minority. According to partial results, they have equalled or gained on their previous record number of seats.

On the campaign trail, most Jewish opposition parties pledged not to work with Arab-majority lists, citing a lack of shared values.

However, Israel’s Arab-led parties could emerge as kingmakers if others were prepared to join forces with them. In this election, Arab Israelis – who often identify as Palestinian citizens of Israel and represent one-fifth of the population – appeared to turn out in unprecedented numbers.

Netanyahu, on the other hand, would need to convince one of the smaller opposition parties to join his coalition if he is to secure a majority at this point.
Many saw this as a make-or-break election to defeat Israel’s most right-wing-ever government, accusing it of stoking racism and hatred.

A huge caveat in all of the current analysis is that the high number of as-yet-uncounted absentee ballots – mostly representing the votes of Israeli soldiers – means a clear picture of the final results is not expected for another day or two.

Overnight, both Netanyahu and Eisenkot addressed their supporters, pledging to form the next government.

“The right-wing bloc has a clear, decisive majority among the Zionist public, among the Jewish public and all those who support the Jewish state. That is what has become clear. A decisive majority,” the Prime Minister told his celebrating supporters – although he stopped short of declaring victory.

“We must form a strong, national, right-wing government. That is what must be done,” he added.

“The public has chosen change,” Eisenkot told his Yashar party after exit polls came out – most of which were initially more favourable to the opposition. “The coalition of failure has lost the people’s trust. The Israeli public voted against Benjamin Netanyahu continuing as prime minister.”

“I will work with my partners to ensure that the people’s decision is translated into a Zionist government: stable and good for all of Israel’s citizens. And quickly – because that is what this moment demands, and because the country needs to be brought back together.”

There are deep divisions in Israeli society which have been underscored by this and previous elections. They have served not just as referenda on Netanyahu’s leadership – as he faces a corruption trial on charges he denies – but also as votes on what kind of country Israel should be.

The Prime Minister and his current coalition partners have taken the country on a hardline religious, nationalist trajectory over the past four years. There were mass protests over their plan for a judicial overhaul before the unprecedented Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which triggered a series of wars – in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.

Many Israelis want to see their country more firmly anchored in liberal and secular values.

Remarkably, the past four turbulent years do not appear to have significantly changed voting patterns.

“We see in the polls that the relative weight of the two main sides: pro-Netanyahu and anti-Netanyahu is about the same,” Professor Tamar Hermann, a pollster at the Israeli Democracy Institute, said just before the election. “People expected that after October 7th, Netanyahu will be down the drain or even toppled but it didn’t happen.”

Already, overnight, the main Israeli parties will have begun their intense political wrangling to try to form a new coalition government.

“Each side will try to pull over defectors, or will try to see if they can make a minority government and will try all these different political kinds of wizardry,” veteran Israeli journalist and author Yaakov Katz said of the process. “But it might not work, and it could take weeks or months to see if someone is actually capable of forming a government.”

The leaders of the bigger parties typically try to win over smaller ones with promises of cabinet positions, budgets or specific policies.
Short of pursuing a unity government, this might be the only option for Netanyahu – but the opposition parties fought this election on a platform of “anyone but Netanyahu”.

It is key now to see if those in the main opposition “change bloc” are ready to break a taboo by seeking a political deal with the Arab parties.

On the campaign trail, one of the bloc’s leaders, right-wing politician Avigdor Lieberman, went as far as to say that he would not sit in a minority government that relied on their support. It was a sign of the increased mistrust and hostility towards Arab citizens since the October 7 assault.

Mansour Abbas, head of Ra’am – the smaller of the two Arab lists – said in a recent interview that, having been part of the diverse coalition that temporarily unseated Netanyahu between 2021 and 2022, he wanted to join the next government. He believed that potential partners would be more open to an alliance after the election.

“These are familiar and well-known party-political considerations. All politicians in Israel say one thing before elections and speak a different language after elections,” he said. “We have experienced this before, and it does not concern us.”

Meanwhile, Netanyahu and his allies have already begun an intense campaign of delegitimising the Arab parties – casting their fellow citizens as a threat from within.
Next week, after the final results are presented to President Isaac Herzog, whose role is largely ceremonial, he will consult all the leaders of elected parties and ask the candidate who appears most likely to form a coalition to do so.

If that candidate is unable to pull together a majority within a maximum of six weeks, then others could be allowed to try.

If, after all the haggling, no one is able to form a governing coalition, a new election will be held in the following months, and the entire process will be repeated.

Capping prices without confronting the costs of supplying goods risks compounding the difficulties facing the marketplace, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has cautioned.

In a statement responding to recent public discussions on easing the cost of living, the Chamber said it firmly opposed broad controls on essential food items, which it warned could distort markets, disrupt supply chains, curb availability and ultimately raise costs for businesses and consumers alike.

The GCCI said retail prices are shaped by more than profit margins, including international commodity prices, freight and transportation expenses, access to foreign currency, and local production and distribution costs. Attributing high prices chiefly to excessive profitability without examining these factors would be misleading, it said.

At the same time, the Chamber acknowledged that businesses must uphold fair and transparent pricing. It does not condone price gouging, the exploitation of shortages or anticompetitive conduct, it said, adding that such concerns are best addressed through the appropriate regulatory mechanisms.

Rather than restrict retail prices, the GCCI urged measures that tackle underlying costs. These include widening importers’ access to foreign currency, reviewing import duties and tariffs where they add to costs, reducing freight and distribution expenses, strengthening domestic agricultural production and fostering greater competition.

“Efforts to improve affordability must focus on reducing the cost of supplying essential commodities rather than simply restricting the prices at which they are sold,” the Chamber said.

Swearing on the lives of his two sons, a West Coast Berbice pujari has denied any involvement in the death of six-year-old Orlando Jaikarran after he was released on station bail.

Ishwar Srikhnu, 47, called “Ravi”, of Bath Settlement, said he has no part in the child’s death and that the allegations have raised concerns about his reputation and the future of his temple. His sons are aged eight and 12.
Srikhnu was released on $500,000 station bail on Monday. Police took him into custody on Thursday, October 15.

He told Ignite News he was saddened after Orlando’s father, Bharrat Jaikarran, publicly pointed to a pujari as responsible while leaving the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court. He rejected Jaikarran’s claim that he arranged for the child to be taken to the waterside for a religious ritual.
Srikhnu said he was at his temple on the night of Wednesday, October 14, into Thursday morning, when Orlando was reported missing. He said 10 or more devotees were present, as many stay overnight during the Navratri season, and that his family was also at home. He left for work early on Thursday, he said.

He questioned how he could be held responsible for removing the child from his bed and taking him to the canal.
Srikhnu said his relationship with Jaikarran had deteriorated before the child’s death. The two men knew each other through Kali worship at his temple, but he later refused to assist Jaikarran with certain religious activities and asked him to stay away from his premises following an alleged incident involving his daughter.

Orlando, also known as “Lil Boy”, was reported missing on October 15 from Waterloo, Bath Settlement. His partially decomposed remains were found in the Waterloo Main Canal on October 20. A post-mortem examination was inconclusive in determining the cause of death.
Jaikarran, 45, was subsequently charged with murder and remanded to prison.

Srikhnu said police have instructed him to report to the station every Friday and are still holding his telephone and wristwatch. The investigation is ongoing.

A 27-year-old former police officer has been charged with money laundering and uttering a forged document after allegedly encashing a $17 million cheque drawn on a magistrates’ court account.

The Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) said Omari James, a labourer and former member of the Guyana Police Force, of Lot 1562, Farm Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was charged with money laundering and uttering a forged document with intent to defraud.

SOCU said investigations found that on August 20, 2025, James presented a Bank of Guyana cheque for $17 million at Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited’s Camp Street branch and received the sum in cash. The cheque was drawn on the maintenance account of the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Court and purported to pay for rehabilitation works at the court.

James also presented an official letter purportedly issued and signed by the Clerk of Court. Investigators allege the letter and the signature on the cheque were forged.
The money laundering charge is contrary to Section 3(1)(c) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Act, Chapter 10:11. The forgery charge is contrary to Section 277 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.

James appeared on Monday before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at Court No. 3 of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to both charges.
The prosecution objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offences, the amount involved and the penalties prescribed by law. The magistrate nonetheless granted bail of $400,000 for both charges.

The matter was adjourned to November 16 for disclosure of the prosecution’s evidence. Attorney-at-Law Darin Chan prosecuted for SOCU, while James was unrepresented.

Motorcycle racer Elliot Vieira will return to local competition on Sunday after a 10-year absence at the Caribbean Clash of Champions, hosted by the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC).

Vieira, the son of Wayne Vieira and cousin of multiple-time champion Matthew Vieira, will face a competitive field at the marquee circuit racing event.

He said he was pleased with the progress in Guyanese motorsport during his time away, particularly in racing standards and facilities.
“It’s been 10 years since I raced in Guyana, and I’m glad to see that the level of racing and the venue have come so far from what they once were. Racing against such high-calibre riders is a great high for our sport because we can only improve from there,” he said.
Vieira said his preparations have focused on regaining race fitness and adapting to his new motorcycle. He last competed about 18 months ago, and the late decision to return left him limited time to prepare.

He is encouraged by his progress in testing and believes he can be competitive on Sunday.
“I’m happy to say the transition was not too challenging, and we are doing great times. We should be very competitive come this Sunday once everything comes together,” he said.
Vieira said he hopes to make his return memorable for spectators.
“So come Sunday, I hope to give the fans a great show and my competitors a greater challenge,” he said.

Admission is $5,000 for adults and $2,000 for children. The event is supported by the Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry, One Guyana, ENet, KFC, GuyOil and Tropical Shipping, among other partners.
Participants can register through an online form. Further information is available from the GMR&SC on 231-5457 or at gmrscgy@gmail.com.

Calls have been made for a concrete bridge to replace the wooden crossing at Speightland, which has been rehabilitated repeatedly.
Linden Mayor Dominique Blair, who visited the bridge, said it is critical to the community and raised concerns about public safety.

“This bridge… It’s just about, I guess about the third time this bridge has been done within the last, what, three to four years,” he said.
Blair said a concrete bridge would be more durable and better suited to the community’s growth and future expansion.

“They should have moved for a more, I think, concrete structure type of bridge so it would last and so we don’t have to come back and keep doing repairs and repairs,” he said.
He added that residents have complained about the contractor’s slow progress on the ongoing works. Blair recalled visiting the bridge last year with a Member of Parliament, when residents raised concerns about its condition.

The wooden bridge has served for many years, he said, but modern alternatives such as steel should now be explored.

Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) need better access to markets, financing and buyers to benefit from growing CARICOM trade, which remains limited across the region.

This is according to Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Private Sector Division Chief Lisa Harding.

She was speaking at the World Trade Centre Georgetown’s Trade and Business Conference, held in collaboration with the Institute of Private Enterprise Development (IPED). Harding questioned why MSMEs continue to be overlooked in investment, trade and financing decisions despite their contribution to Caribbean economies.

Harding said intra-CARICOM trade rose from US$5.2 billion in 2023 to about US$7.1 billion in 2024. However, this represented only about 7.4 per cent of the bloc’s global trade, pointing to room for deeper regional integration.

She said MSMEs make up an estimated 70 to 85 per cent of enterprises, contribute up to 70 per cent of gross domestic product and support about half of regional employment.

“These are not businesses that are on the sidelines of the economies. They are at the heart of how we create jobs, how we earn income,” she said.

Harding identified opportunities for Guyanese entrepreneurs in agriculture, tourism, oil and gas, construction, renewable energy and professional services, but said spotting them would not guarantee success. Small businesses must connect with buyers, understand supply requirements, meet quality standards and deliver consistently, she said, while financial institutions must offer financing suited to specific needs, whether working capital, equipment or trade finance.

“Finance must follow the business opportunity and not force the business to fit the financing product,” she said.

She also called for stronger accountability in business support programmes, saying success should not be measured by the number of entrepreneurs trained or sent on trade missions. Organisations should instead track whether businesses secure contracts, enter new markets, increase sales and create jobs.

“The real success is not really about getting a business in the room. It’s about helping the business to win that order,” she said.

Karan Ramlakhan, also known as Kevin Singh, was granted $150,000 bail after pleading not guilty to two charges of obtaining money by false pretence over alleged housing allocation promises.

Ramlakhan, a 25-year-old minibus driver from East Bank Demerara, appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where the charges were read to him.

The matter was adjourned to November 23, 2026.

Police said the charges followed an investigation into allegations that Ramlakhan obtained $300,000 from a victim in Georgetown between September 10, 2024, and September 14, 2026, by claiming he could facilitate the allocation of a house lot through contacts at the Ministry of Housing.

The victim allegedly paid the money to secure the allocation, but the promised lot was not obtained, prompting a report to the police.

During the investigation, Ramlakhan reportedly admitted to collecting money from individuals and passing it to persons he claimed worked at the ministry to expedite housing allocations in exchange for a percentage of the payments.

He further claimed that the $300,000 collected from the victim had been handed over to one of those individuals.

Police also received two additional reports alleging that Ramlakhan had collected money from other individuals under similar circumstances, promising to secure turnkey houses.

He was arrested on October 22 and charged on October 26 with two counts of obtaining by false pretence, contrary to Section 194 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.

Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has sidestepped questions about who would lead the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party if he is extradited to the United States, expressing confidence that he will remain in Guyana and become president in 2031.

“By God’s grace, I will be here, and come 2031, I will be the president of this country to ensure that our people can live a better life,” he said.
Mohamed also touted WIN’s political strength, claiming the party enjoys support across all racial groups.

“WIN is a formidable force, a force to reckon with. The people want a change. We are the only political party … where we have support from all the races,” he said.
He told reporters that the extradition proceedings were politically motivated, arguing that he would have continued living comfortably had he not announced his political ambitions on Independence Day in 2025.

Mohamed said he entered politics after supporters urged him to contest the presidency.

He and his father are contesting extradition proceedings linked to US criminal charges, including allegations of gold-related fraud, money laundering and customs offences. Both deny the allegations.

Davion Mars was crowned the first champion of the Pegasus Weekly Chess League with six points, as Oluwadare Oyeyipo beat Jaden Taylor in the final round to claim third place.

Mars had secured the title in Round 6, leaving Keron Sandiford, Oyeyipo and Taylor to contest the remaining podium places.

Oyeyipo built an advantage of about +5 by move 14 after a pawn recapture created a tactical pin. He won several pawns but lost a bishop as Taylor fought back.

A miscalculation by Taylor then let Oyeyipo regain the bishop, and with a commanding pawn advantage he forced Taylor’s resignation on move 35.
Elsewhere, Sandiford defeated Martin Poon to take second place on tiebreaks. He and Oyeyipo both finished on five points.

Sachin Beharry was named Best Newcomer.

Season 2 begins on November 2, 2026, with updates on the Drayton’s Chess Club Facebook page.

The league is organised by Drayton’s Chess Club in partnership with the Pegasus Chess Club and the Guyana Chess Federation.

Rice farmers hit by weak global prices can earn a second income from the same land by raising ducks alongside paddy, under a rice-duck integrated farming initiative.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha said the initiative creates two potential income streams from the same acreage. He was delivering the feature address at the programme, supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Government of Canada, at the Guyana Rice Development Board’s (GRDB) Rice Research Station.

That matters, he said, because farmers have long depended mainly on paddy while unfavourable global prices continue to challenge producers.
Under proper management, ducks can also help control certain insects and weeds, while their manure adds nutrients, he said. This could reduce reliance on some inputs, lower costs and improve profitability, while making rice cultivation more environmentally sustainable.

Mustapha said the initiative reflects the Government’s commitment, under President Dr Irfaan Ali’s leadership, to introduce cost-effective practices and help farmers stay competitive. It also shows how research and sound policy can open new opportunities in the sector, he said.
He welcomed the support of the FAO and Canada, saying such partnerships are important to bringing modern techniques to local producers.

A pujari held over the murder of six-year-old Orlando Jaikarran in West Coast Berbice has been released on bail, police said on Tuesday, while the search for the child’s missing remains continues.
Region Five Commander Senior Superintendent Lonsdale Whithrite confirmed the release of the Bath Settlement religious leader on Tuesday morning. On Saturday, October 24, he said investigators were doing additional work on the case file, which would be returned, and that the man was expected to be charged shortly.

Orlando’s head and portions of his limbs have not been recovered. Whithrite had dismissed social media claims that the head was found in an ice cooler, saying the search was ongoing.
The child’s father, Bharrat Jaikarran, 45, a cane harvester of Waterloo, Bath Settlement, was remanded to prison on Friday, October 23, the day his son was buried.
Jaikarran appeared before Magistrate Shareefah Parks at the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court, where the murder charge was read to him. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
He indicated that he wanted to speak, but Police Prosecutor Sergeant Garfield Edwards objected, telling the court that the accused had already confessed and that the matter was not a trial. Jaikarran also alleged that he had been beaten in police custody.

The prosecutor said the case file was complete and legal advice had been sought, while investigations involving the other accused person continue. The matter was transferred to the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court for November 12, 2026, for a report.
Orlando’s badly decomposed body was found in the Waterloo Main Canal, near the sea dam at Bath Settlement, in the early hours of Tuesday, October 20, nearly a week after he was reported missing.

Police said preliminary investigations indicated he was taken to the canal on Thursday, October 15, and struck on the neck with a cutlass. Further enquiries on October 20 led to the recovery of several items of evidential value at the location.
Police also searched a residence at Bath Settlement, seizing six cutlasses and other items, which were lodged as exhibits. Orlando’s father and the pujari were arrested as investigations progressed.
A post-mortem examination on Wednesday, October 21, was inconclusive.

Abhishek Sharma struck a 35-ball century in India’s astonishing chase of 199 in just 13.2 overs in the third T20 against New Zealand in Wellington.

Abhishek and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi blitzed 133 in seven overs for the first wicket, with their powerplay score of 118 setting a new record for international T20s.

Fifteen-year-old Sooryavanshi’s 45 from 19 balls was merely a supporting act to Abhishek, who raced to his fifty from 15 deliveries as New Zealand’s bowlers wilted.

After the youngster’s departure in the eighth over, Abhishek helped India cruise towards their target, falling for 113 from 38 balls – which included nine fours and 11 sixes.

He fell short of equalling his record for India’s fastest T20 hundred, which came off 30 balls against Afghanistan last month.

India’s middle order then ticked off the remaining 21 runs required with ease, with New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner’s figures of 1-17 off three overs an outlier in a painful match for bowlers.

The Black Caps’ 198-3 was set up by Daryl Mitchell’s 89 from 52 balls and Finn Allen added 40 off 25, and their total looked competitive until India barely broke a sweat in their pursuit.

The result gives India an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, which is followed by five one-day internationals and two Tests. (BBC Sport)

Guyanese karate athletes won 28 medals, including six gold, at the 5th International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) World Shoto Cup Karate Tournament in Mérida, Mexico, over three days of competition.
The 92-member ISKF-Guyana delegation also collected seven silver and 15 bronze medals in individual and team events. The team had spent two days before the contest at training seminars led by ISKF Chairman and Chief Instructor Shihan Hiroyoshi Okazaki.

Guyana’s green and purple belt competitors opened the campaign on Friday, October 23, and Agnes Siju made the strongest start, winning gold in both kata and kumite in the female 14-15 division. Katalina Carter, Arryann Sankar and Zenaide Marcus then combined to take gold in team kata, and Carter added silver in individual kata.
Marcus also won bronze in individual kata and kumite, while Jonathan Singh, Thalia Robinson and Geetanjali Ramnarace each took bronze in both disciplines.
The brown belts continued the run on Saturday. Myla Babb-Romney won gold in female 12-13 kumite, and Jadah Barnwell finished second in the same discipline. Shacquel Jerry took silver in kata and bronze in kumite, Miah Sampson won bronze in both events, and Kempton Carter earned bronze in kumite.

Guyana’s black belts closed the tournament on Sunday, October 25, against some of the strongest competitors in the field. Malakai Babb-Romney won gold in male 14-15 kumite, and Amario Tyrrell took silver in male 12-13 kumite.
Trivena Tyrrell won silver in kata and bronze in kumite, while Jasmin Dalgetty did the reverse, taking bronze in kata and silver in kumite. Kelly Carter added silver in female 15-17 kumite.
The black belts also performed well in team events. Babb-Romney, Emily Ibbott and Dalgetty won gold in the mixed 12-14 team kata division, and Jaden Dalgetty, Jonathan Yong and Kelly Carter took bronze in the mixed 15-17 division.

Off the floor, three members of the delegation gained international officiating experience. ISKF-Guyana Country Director and Chief Instructor Christopher Chaves, who led the delegation, Alex Rodrigues and Storm Katchay served as judges at the tournament.
The delegation’s participation was supported by financial assistance from the Government through the Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry and the National Sports Commission.

Families in the Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme, Region Four, now have a second way in and out of their community, with a new road to the Aubrey Barker Highway partially open.
The 1,800 metres of reinforced concrete roadway is 75 per cent complete. The scheme was previously accessible mainly through Red Road, ‘E’ Field, Sophia.

Housing Minister Collin Croal recently returned to the scheme to inspect the works, following commitments made during a community outreach in July.

“As a result of a visit that I had here, the residents asked us to construct the road for them to be able to access through the Aubrey Barker end… I am pleased to see the work is ongoing,” Croal said.

He said all types of vehicles will be able to use the eastern end within a week, and the western end will be completed within two weeks.
“Every resident will soon enjoy two reliable entry points into the scheme,” he said.

First-time homeowner Chandra Singh said the road is a welcome addition for residents who are building and starting to live in the community.
“It’s going to make access so much easier for us living here. As a first-time homeowner, I really appreciate this initiative. I stand as one lucky homeowner, and I look forward to seeing more initiatives like this across the country as new communities are built,” she said.

Resident Tara Balram said the road gives her a more convenient route to her workplace.
“With this newly constructed road, it is very convenient for me to reach to my work … I’m super excited and proud about the work that the Government has been doing for the short period of time that I have been here,” Balram said.
The Aubrey Barker Highway connects to the Ogle-Eccles Highway, the Mandela to Eccles Highway and the Heroes Highway. These routes give residents access to central Georgetown, the East Coast, the East Bank and Region Three via the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.
The northern section of the scheme has more than 450 completed turn-key two and three-bedroom flat and elevated homes, along with internal concrete roads, a police outpost and public open spaces.

In the southern section, where house lots have been allocated, families are beginning to build. First-phase infrastructure, including electrical networks and pipelines, has been installed.
Croal said the Housing Ministry will undertake further improvements as occupancy increases and more families settle in.

We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) says it has received no further communication from the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on resuming talks between the two opposition groups, nearly two months after their last meeting.

WIN General Secretary Odessa Primus said APNU leader Aubrey Norton had contacted her by phone to propose another meeting but did not indicated a date and time.

“To the best of my knowledge, we have not had a meeting or indications of need for a meeting thereafter,” Primus told a WIN press conference.
She said she had also received no further communication from APNU’s general secretary.
“I have not received any follow-up calls, nor have I received any emails, text, anything at all from the General Secretary of that party,” Primus said.
Despite the lack of contact, Primus said she did not believe the delay reflected animosity between the parties. She suggested that competing priorities on WIN’s side may have contributed, while noting that APNU had not indicated when the groups might meet again.

“I do not have any concerns to the effect that either parties are not inclined to meet if it becomes necessary,” she said.

The lack of further engagement follows an earlier agreement by WIN and APNU to consider establishing a six-member team, with three representatives from each party, to develop guidelines for future discussions.
The proposal has yet to be finalised. WIN is expected to consult its leadership and membership before deciding whether to participate, while APNU is to consult the other parties in its coalition before selecting its representatives.

At their previous meeting, the two sides discussed matters relating to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), the impasse at the Region Ten Regional Democratic Council and nominations to the Local Government Commission. No final decisions were reached on those issues.

Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed claims that gold smuggling is draining more than US$1 billion from Guyana’s banking system, even as he and his father, Nazar Mohamed, fight extradition to the United States over alleged gold-smuggling offences.

Mohamed, the leader of We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), made the claim at a press briefing on Monday, saying it was based on his experience in the gold business.

“Approximately, based on my investigation, being in the gold business, approximately over US$1 billion not coming into our banking system,” he told reporters.

Mohamed, whom the US identified several years ago as a target involved in such operations, urged the Government to go after smugglers in the industry. He also suggested identifying those involved in gold trading and establishing a special branch to strengthen security along Guyana’s borders, including in Lethem, to prevent gold from being smuggled out of the country.

However, Mohamed’s estimate has not been independently verified, and it remains unclear how he arrived at the figure. It also exceeds the US$50 million loss cited by US prosecutors in a Florida indictment involving him and his father.

The two men face 11 charges, including money laundering, bribery, tax evasion, wire fraud and mail fraud. US prosecutors allege that at least 10,000 kilogrammes of gold have been exported through Miami since 2017 without the payment of Guyanese taxes and royalties, costing Guyana an estimated US$50 million.

Both men have denied the allegations but are fighting extradition to the US to answer the charges.

Turning to the wider economy, Mohamed said the current foreign-currency shortage was driving up the cost of obtaining US dollars and placing additional pressure on businesses that rely on imports. He criticised the Government for what he described as its silence on the issue and called for action to address the shortage.

He argued that rising gold prices over the past two years should have generated significantly greater foreign-exchange earnings to help meet the country’s import demand.

“Two years ago, the gold price was around US$2,000 an ounce. Now, today, it’s at a historic US$4,200. The same amount of gold exported back then compared with now can bring in twice as much money to offset the costs faced by importers in our country. But the Government is very silent on this, and this is the main issue affecting us in terms of the cost of living and the foreign-currency exchange rate,” he said.

The Guyana Gold Board has attributed the rise in local gold prices over the past two years to stronger global demand for safe-haven assets, aggressive central-bank buying and heightened geopolitical tensions. The international price surge has also increased the value of Guyana’s gold exports, with the Gold Board aligning local prices with global benchmarks while enforcing domestic declaration requirements.

Mohamed also raised concerns about rising food prices and supermarket costs, calling for price controls on food items to help ease the cost-of-living burden.

Urgent capital investment in Caribbean ports is needed to cut shipping costs that are driving up the cost of living and weakening regional competitiveness.

President Dr Irfaan Ali made the call on Monday at the opening of the 56th Annual General Meeting, Conference and Exhibition of the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA) at the Guyana Marriott Hotel. He proposed an urgent regional policy document, backed by the Caribbean Development Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and IDB Invest, to attract financing for port modernisation.

“What is required immediately now is investment, capital investment,” he said.

Ali said high transportation costs, uneven port infrastructure, weak intra-Caribbean trade, climate-related disasters and geopolitical instability are interconnected and demand a coordinated response from governments, operators, investors and development partners.

“Ultimately, high shipping costs become a cost of living problem for people and a competitiveness problem for businesses,” he said.

A key factor, he said, is that many territories depend on transshipment, which adds cargo handling, lengthens transit times and makes schedules unreliable. Guyana has had containers held at transshipment ports for extended periods, which has delayed projects and raised costs.

“We had containers sitting on some transshipment ports for a year and a half, two years, nine months,” he said.

Citing a May 2026 International Monetary Fund working paper, Ali said shipping costs in most Caribbean countries exceed the global average. A 2018 IDB study, he added, found that many regional ports were at least 50 years old and built for a different commercial environment.

Turning to Guyana, he pointed to the proposed deep-water port and dredging of the Demerara River to accommodate larger vessels, part of a strategy to link the country with northern Brazil and other markets. Private investment in shore bases and port facilities along the river over the past four to five years could exceed US$1 billion, he said, but more financing will be needed.

To attract that capital, he urged stakeholders to examine the fiscal incentives and banking arrangements required.
“What is the mechanism that is required to unlock financing?” he asked.

Ali also called for simpler customs procedures and harmonised documentation to ease intra-Caribbean trade, and for climate-resilient ports with stronger coastal protection, drainage and power systems. He urged governments and businesses to expand storage capacity and diversify supply sources, and cautioned that the costs of shipping’s shift to cleaner fuels must be carefully assessed for smaller economies.

The four-day conference, which runs until October 28 under the theme “Building a More Connected, Resilient and Competitive Caribbean,” brings together more than 450 maritime stakeholders, policymakers and industry experts.

Some 1,000 pregnant heifers bought from Brazil are expected to lift cattle numbers and local production, as the Government steps up funding and breeding technology for livestock farmers.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha made the disclosure at the Ruminant Exhibition 2026 at Rising Sun Turf Club, West Coast Berbice, on Sunday.

“We want to develop the livestock sector,” he said, adding that the Government has raised its allocations to support the industry, including through breeding programmes and direct support to farmers.

Mustapha said modern breeding technology is also being introduced to improve the quality of animals.

“We have now a new technology that we brought in where we are doing embryo transplant,” he said, noting that animals produced through the programme were on display. About 300 embryo transfers were carried out last year at the Government’s facility at Ebini, and more farmers will be brought into the programme to expand and improve their stock.

He said the country now has the capacity to feed its population without relying on imports.

The exhibition brought together farmers, livestock producers, stakeholders and members of the public. It featured categories of cattle, sheep and goats, along with the Fireside Mutton Curry Competition, which linked livestock production to local food traditions.

Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) Chief Executive Officer Dr Dwight Walrond said the large turnout and visitors’ questions showed strong interest in livestock farming. Organisers changed the layout this year to simplify judging and viewing.

“This year, we would have done things a little differently, where we had all the different categories into one area to make the process much easier for the judges and for you, the farmers, to see,” he said.

Walrond urged farmers to learn from the animals presented by their colleagues.

“When you look at what your colleague is doing, I’m sure you want to return next year with new zest to ensure that you can be confident among the chosen,” he said.
He also acknowledged the Government’s financial support for ruminant development.

“This year alone, we would have received more than $100 million, which went directly into rural development,” Walrond said. “So it’s more than $100 million for you, the farmers, that are here today. That alone should bring some joy to you, the farmers,” he added.

He urged farmers to work closely with the GLDA to build on initiatives introduced at a recent livestock conference.

I trimmed the second paragraph’s repeat of cattle numbers and production, since the lead now carries it.

A nine-year-old boy escaped a Kilcoy, Corentyne, house fire on Sunday evening that killed his father, who was asleep when a spark from an electric fan reportedly ignited the bed.

Tansingh Rampersaud, 45, a bell loader operator, died in the blaze at Second Street, Lot 9. His charred remains were found after firefighters put out the fire, which broke out around 6:30pm.

Firefighters found the house fully engulfed on arrival and were told one occupant was unaccounted for.

Family members said the boy told them the fan sparked a fire that spread to the bed. The cause has not been officially confirmed.

Rampersaud’s brother, Cheenarine Rampersaud, said relatives rushed to the scene after the boy ran to alert them. The flames had already spread through the house, and a grille at the back door blocked entry, he said.

“The fire blaze on the back window, I took a big brick, and I knock the window, when I do that the fire go off and me pitch back like 6 feet away. Me run come back on the dam, I tell them I can’t do nothing, the whole house catch fire,” he said.

“If it had less fire, me coulda jump through and try my best to save him, but we couldn’t do nothing. Me couldn’t go to the fire,” he said.
Cheenarine said he could not sleep on Sunday night, haunted by his brother’s cries for help.

“Like the voice left inside, when he said ‘aye bai’, when he drink that’s how he would call me, so me hear the voice shout out ‘Aye bai’ but me alone was there,” he said.
He said he fears for his nephew’s future. The boy lost his mother at age two.

Rampersaud’s mother, Ajumatie Prithtipaul, 73, said she saw her son earlier on Sunday and found him asleep after drinking. She urged him to stop, and he promised to do so, saying he intended to earn money to repay people to whom he owed credit.

“My son never tell me one word. Even if me fight him, or what me tell him, he not open he mouth and tell me one word. He’s a good son to me,” she said.

Prithtipaul said she was home when the boy arrived, running and crying, to say the house was on fire.

The family is arranging care for the boy. Investigations are ongoing.

A multi-million-dollar mechanised poultry processing plant and hatchery with a storage capacity of 300,000 pounds was commissioned at Fyrish, Region Six, on Sunday, as Guyana expands its agricultural processing capacity.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha represented President Dr Irfaan Ali at the ceremony hosted by Haji Ishmail (Pampy) and his family, congratulating them on the investment on behalf of the President and himself.

Mustapha said the facility demonstrates local entrepreneurs’ confidence in Guyana’s economic future and supports efforts to strengthen food security, expand agricultural production and increase private sector investment in agro-processing.

He said the Government was shifting agriculture beyond primary production to focus on processing, value addition, job creation and sustainable industries.

The plant is expected to improve efficiency, strengthen food safety, reduce post-production losses and create opportunities for farmers, workers, transport operators and other businesses along the agricultural value chain. Its storage capacity will also help preserve poultry products and maintain a reliable local supply.

Mustapha also highlighted Islamic principles of honesty, fairness in business, hard work and lawful earnings, describing them as important to building successful businesses and stronger communities.

He welcomed the Quranic programme held during the ceremony, describing it as a reminder of the importance of being grateful to God.

Brazil’s veteran left-wing president has pulled off a surprise win, but his road to victory was not smooth and he faces the most challenging political landscape since first taking office in 2003.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated his right-wing rival Flávio Bolsonaro in a bitterly fought campaign by 4.4 million votes.

Bolsonaro has told his supporters in Brasília that he would seek the annulment of the election. But this has not stopped Lula and his supporters from celebrating what they describe as a “historic victory”.

It was a dramatic comeback after the former metalworker, who has already served three terms as president, lost the first round of voting.

Many had not thought it possible for him to turn the result around in just three weeks. But Lula’s campaign sprang back, driven by street demonstrations and a massive social media push.

His election win has bucked a wider trend in Latin America, where voters have punished incumbents and turned to the right. Across the region, large countries such as Argentina, Chile and Colombia all now have conservative leaders at their helm.

But his new term, set to begin on January 5, 2027, will start amid significant constraints at home and abroad, including animosity from US President Donald Trump.
While Trump did not endorse Lula’s rival, Bolsonaro, directly – something he did with the right-wing candidates who went on to win presidential elections held in Colombia and Honduras – there is little doubt his administration would have preferred to see a conservative at the helm of this country of 213 million people.

The White House regards Latin America as an area of US influence, with the Trump administration keen to have leaders in power who support its policies, including on defence, security and trade.

It is also keen to reduce China’s influence in the Western Hemisphere.

Brazil, which is oil-rich and holds the world’s second-largest reserves of rare earth minerals, is the only big country in South America not governed by a right-wing leader, with Lula largely seen as China-friendly.

Bolsonaro had promised to align Brazil more closely with Washington, while Lula had warned the US not to interfere in the election and insisted that Brazil would “never fit into anyone’s backyard”.

But while there may be disappointment in the White House, Lula’s victory will be welcomed by environmentalists who had feared that a win by Bolsonaro would have given Brazil’s influential agribusiness and mining sectors more power.

They had pointed to record levels of deforestation and forest fires in the Amazon during the presidency of his father, Jair, arguing that under the younger Bolsonaro laxer environmental policies could again lead to destruction in this key ecosystem.

While Lula’s supporters are ecstatic about his victory, the result shows that the country remains deeply divided, with more than 48 per cent of voters choosing Bolsonaro.
In addition to the challenge of uniting such a deeply polarised country, Lula will have to govern alongside the most right-wing Congress in Brazil’s democratic era.

Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party (PL) was the party that made the biggest gains in the election.

And yet, Lula’s Workers’ Party managed to organise huge rallies ahead of the run-off, showing the strong grassroots support it commands.
Before the election, Lula had described the poll as “a parting of the waters for Brazil”.

He promised to bridge the gap between Brazil’s opposing political poles with “a new way of governing”, adding in a WhatsApp livestream before the election that “this country will never be the same again”.

While he provided little detail as to what the new way of governing would entail, he insisted he would “remain firm in the fight for a more just country, with opportunities for all and policies directed at the needs of the population”.

With a largely hostile Congress, this fight just may prove much harder for the veteran leader – who will be 85 by the end of his fourth term – than in his three previous terms in office. (BBC News)

An 11-year-old boy was among five people injured when two cars collided on Bushy Park Public Road, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, on Sunday afternoon.

The boy, Terry Sookram, suffered lacerations to his chin and abdomen and was transferred to Bath Regional Hospital, where his condition is regarded as serious.

The crash occurred at about 3pm and involved car PXX 8993, owned and driven by Joel Sookram, 28, and car PAE 2042, owned and driven by Surindra Sookram, 33.

Initial reports said both cars were travelling east at speed when the driver of PXX 8993 allegedly tried to overtake and struck the right side of PAE 2042. Both drivers reportedly lost control, and the vehicles hit a lamp post and a tree on the northern parapet of the road.

Teressa Mohammed, 26, a passenger in PXX 8993, sustained lacerations to her neck and left hand, and her condition is regarded as stable. Joel Sookram was treated for a forehead laceration and Surindra Sookram for a head laceration. Both are stable.

Ravindra Sookram, 27, another occupant of PAE 2042, was treated for pain about his body and sent away.

Passers-by assisted the injured and took them to Mahaicony Cottage Hospital, where a doctor examined them. Three were later taken to Bath Regional Hospital.

King Charles III will arrive in Guyana on Thursday for a two-day state visit expected to highlight six decades of diplomatic relations, growing economic ties and cooperation on environmental protection.

The State’s Department of Public Information (DPI) says the King’s visit will run from October 29 to 30, his first trip to Guyana since February 2000, when he visited as Prince of Wales.

It is being undertaken at the invitation of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and at the request of the United Kingdom Government.

Guyana is one of the stops on the King’s autumn tour from October 27 to November 4, ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.

The King’s engagements will begin with a meeting with President Ali at State House, followed by a reception that will bring together representatives of communities from across Guyana.

He is also scheduled to honour British, Guyanese and Commonwealth military personnel who died in service at the Georgetown memorial, meet elected leaders of the National Toshaos Council and visit the Botanical Gardens to engage with young environmental leaders.

On Friday, the King will meet British businesses and local stakeholders to discuss partnerships and investment opportunities. He will also engage with scientists, Indigenous community members and innovators during the Global Biodiversity Alliance Conference at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, where he is expected to receive a briefing on the work of the Iwokrama International Centre.

His final engagement is scheduled for the Georgetown seawall, where he will hear about sustainable urban development and efforts to restore coastal mangroves.

The King’s longstanding links with Guyana include his support for forest conservation and the country’s Low Carbon Development Strategy. He visited the Iwokrama rainforest in 2000 and became patron of the Iwokrama International Centre that year, renewing his patronage in 2024.

The King’s Foundation is also partnering with the Guyanese Government on the Georgetown Urban Framework Plan, which includes demonstration projects intended to advance sustainable development.

The visit comes as Guyana marks 60 years of independence from Britain, having become independent in May 1966 and a republic in 1970, while remaining a member of the Commonwealth.

A 20-year-old motorcyclist died on Saturday night after his motorcycle collided with a car on Edinburgh Public Road, East Bank Berbice.

Adriano Anthony, of New Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice, succumbed to his injuries at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was taken for medical treatment following the crash, which occurred at about 7:50 p.m.

Police said initial investigations indicate that Anthony was riding motorcycle CR 6077 south along the eastern driving lane of Edinburgh Public Road, allegedly at a fast rate of speed.

The motor car, PJJ 8613, driven by a 22-year-old man from Lochaber Village, West Canje, was reportedly stationary on the western side of the road when it allegedly made a sudden left turn into the motorcycle’s path.

The motorcycle collided with the left side of the car, throwing Anthony onto the road and leaving him with injuries to his body.

He was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where a doctor examined him. However, he died while receiving medical attention.

Anthony’s body is at the hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police said a breathalyser test conducted on the car driver recorded a reading of zero. The driver remains in custody, assisting with the investigation.

Guyana will be represented at the 44th Haynes Smith Miss Caribbean Talented Teen Pageant, with Syesha Fraser among ten finalists selected for the regional competition set for December 30, 2026, in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Fraser will compete alongside young women from nine other Caribbean territories for the prestigious title, as the pageant celebrates youth talent, cultural identity and leadership.

The organisers said registrations were received from more than 13 Caribbean countries and territories before a selection process determined the ten delegates who will advance to the final.

This year’s theme, “Radiant Treasures of the Caribbean,” will showcase the region’s diverse heritage, traditions and achievements. Each finalist is expected to highlight a national treasure from her homeland, offering audiences a glimpse into the culture and identity of the territory she represents.

The other finalists are Schulyer Francois of St. Vincent and the Grenadines; K’Dyah James of the British Virgin Islands; Amaya Marks of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Kimora Edwards of Grenada; Denayja Cognette of Anguilla; Blossom Joseph of St. Lucia; La’Shonté Joseph of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tatiyana Archer of St. Kitts and Nevis; and Sati Ramcharan of Trinidad and Tobago.

The organising committee said the competition celebrates Caribbean culture while empowering young women to develop confidence, leadership skills and a stronger connection to their national identities.

Now in its 44th edition, the pageant has built a legacy spanning more than four decades, providing a platform for young women to showcase their talents and represent their homelands.

The December 30 event is expected to bring together delegates and supporters from across the Caribbean for a celebration of regional talent and cultural pride.

Mindful Guyana Inc. is seeking to strengthen community development across Guyana by equipping volunteers and community representatives with the skills needed to identify local needs, mobilise residents and support sustainable initiatives.

The organisation hosted its Community Capacity Building and Training Programme at the Cara Lodge, in Georgetown yesterday, bringing together directors, volunteers and community representatives.

Chairman Royston King stressed that effective community development requires proper training, responsible leadership and collaboration, beyond goodwill and a willingness to serve.

“Building stronger communities begins with empowering the people who serve them,” King said. “When we invest in knowledge, develop leadership, encourage participation, and foster collaboration, we create better opportunities to address community challenges and achieve meaningful, lasting change.”

The training covered community engagement, volunteer leadership, communication, identifying community needs, problem-solving and cooperation among stakeholders.

Participants were also sensitised to the importance of treating residents with dignity and respect, maintaining confidentiality, observing appropriate boundaries and referring cases to qualified professionals when necessary.

Mindful Guyana said volunteers play a critical role in identifying emerging concerns, listening to residents and connecting individuals and families with relevant opportunities and support.

The initiative is expected to improve volunteer preparedness, strengthen leadership and communication skills, and enhance coordination among community partners.

The organization emphasised that sustainable development requires cooperation among residents, community leaders, civil society organisations, public institutions and other stakeholders.

It said the programme forms part of a broader effort to build local capacity, encourage participation and promote shared responsibility for community well-being.

The programme was held under the theme: “Stronger people. Stronger communities. A stronger Guyana.”

The University of Toronto has honoured Guyanese legal pioneer Iris de Freitas Brazao through two lectures examining her groundbreaking achievements and contributions to legal and academic history.

Held earlier this October 2026 as part of Women’s History Month, the lectures were delivered by Guyanese-Canadian historian Dr. Joanne Collins-Gonsalves, highlighting Brazao’s journey across the Caribbean, Canada and the United Kingdom during the early 20th century.

Brazao was the first female lawyer in Guyana and the wider Commonwealth Caribbean. She attended the University of Toronto in 1918 before pursuing further studies in Wales and England. In 1925, she became the first woman of African descent to graduate from the University of Oxford and later graduated from the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple in 1929.

Following her call to the Bar that year, she returned to Guyana, where she served in several distinguished positions.

The first lecture, held on October 15 at the university’s Scarborough campus, explored Brazao’s legacy of legal leadership. The second, at the St. George campus, examined the challenges she navigated amid war, a pandemic and prejudice between 1917 and 1929.

Dr. Collins-Gonsalves’ research was recognised for its contributions to women’s history, legal history and the histories of Canada, the United Kingdom and the Caribbean.

The lectures were supported by the PIE Fund and Historical and Cultural Studies at the Scarborough campus, through the efforts of distinguished Professor Dr. Afua Cooper.

Dr. Collins-Gonsalves is a historian, managing director of Historical Research International Inc. in Canada and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in the United Kingdom.

She is also the author of the books: Portuguese in Business in Guyana 1835-1935: A History of Entrepreneurship, Expansion and Diversification (2025, Iris de Freitas Brazao, Legal Luminary and Trailblazer: Caribbean, Canada, Wales, England 1896-1989 (2023) and From Ashes to Ferro-Concrete: A History of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Guyana) 1914-2014 (2014).

Residents of four Region Seven communities will have an opportunity to help shape local economic development projects as the Small Business Bureau (SBB) begins consultations this week under its Community Development Projects (CDP) programme.

The consultations will explore potential income-generating ventures in hydroponics, shade-house farming, aquaculture and beekeeping, with residents invited to share ideas, identify community needs and express interest in the proposed initiatives.

Under the theme “Your Community, Your Ideas, Your Opportunity,” the programme aims to help residents work together to establish sustainable projects, acquire practical skills and create lasting economic opportunities.

The first consultation will be held at the River’s View Benab in Goshen on October 29 at 1 p.m.

Three additional meetings are scheduled for October 30. Residents of Itaballi will meet at the Itaballi Community Centre Ground at 10 a.m., followed by a consultation at the Greenfield Play Ground in Batavia at 1 p.m.

The final meeting will be held at Two Miles Primary School, serving residents of the 1–4 Miles Potaro Road area, at 4 p.m.

The SBB is encouraging farmers, community groups, aspiring entrepreneurs and other residents to participate in the discussions, which are intended to identify projects suited to local circumstances and interests.

The consultations will provide an opportunity for communities to contribute directly to discussions on potential business ventures and explore ways to turn local ideas into viable economic activities.

Facility will provide specialised outpatient care for stroke survivors and people living with neurological conditions

Guyana is investing $55 million in its first Neurological Rehabilitation Centre, a specialised outpatient facility expected to improve recovery and independence for stroke survivors and people living with neurological conditions.

Construction began with a sod-turning ceremony on October 16 at Industry, East Coast Demerara. The centre is expected to be completed and commissioned by the end of 2027.

The facility will provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, medical support and psychosocial services to help patients regain mobility, improve communication and manage everyday activities.

It will cater to people recovering from strokes and those living with conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony said the centre would help address the needs of stroke patients, many of whom experience lasting effects on their mobility and independence.

“We know that in our country, we have been experiencing a lot of people who would have high blood pressure, and sometimes if they don’t take care of it, they can end up with a stroke. And this centre is also intended to help those persons with stroke to help them to bring them to full recovery,” he said.

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke, making its effective management important in preventing serious complications.

Meanwhile, Director of Rehabilitation and Disabilities Services Dr. Ariane Mangar said the centre would strengthen the country’s capacity to deliver specialised rehabilitation and improve patient outcomes.

“This will help us to treat those patients and definitely get better outcomes, and then the patients will have a better quality of life. That’s our aim,” she said.

The centre will complement existing rehabilitation services across Guyana’s 10 administrative regions, working alongside regional rehabilitation departments to support continuity of care closer to patients’ homes.

The investment forms part of the Ministry of Health’s efforts to expand rehabilitation services and improve support for people living with disabilities and those recovering from illnesses that affect neurological functioning.

Beyond treatment, the facility is expected to help patients regain independence where possible while easing some of the challenges faced by families and caregivers.

Accountant and Attorney at law, Christopher Ram has taken his access-to-information dispute to 13 diplomatic, regional and international bodies, accusing the government of failing to address concerns over citizens’ right to access public records.

Ram said in a press release Saturday that he wrote to diplomatic missions representing the European Union, United States, China, United Kingdom, Canada and India, as well as CARICOM, international human rights bodies, the International Monetary Fund and transparency organisations.

He has asked the bodies to intervene within their respective mandates, including raising the matter with the government, examining its obligations under human rights frameworks and reviewing how taxes paid on behalf of oil companies are recorded.

The move comes as Commissioner of Information Charles Ramson Sr. appeals a High Court ruling requiring him to decide outstanding information requests by November 27.

Ram explained that on September 28, Justice Nicola Pierre ruled that Ramson is a public authority under the Access to Information Act 2011. She found that his failure to decide requests within the statutory 60-day period amounted to a refusal and ordered him to act.

Ram said Ramson filed his appeal on October 16, arguing that he is not a public authority and that citizens must first approach the agency holding the requested information.

He warned that further appeals could delay implementation of the law for a year or more.

Ram also questioned the government’s commitment to transparency, noting that President Irfaan Ali retained the information portfolio in October 2025. He said, to his knowledge, no annual report on the Act has been laid before the National Assembly since it came into force.

Ram is urging the government to intervene, arguing that prolonged legal proceedings leave citizens without timely access to public information.

Cricketers in Region One will have greater opportunities to access organised competitions, coaching and talent identification programmes following the formal integration of the Barima/Waini Cricket Association into the Essequibo Cricket Board’s administrative structure.

The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) announced the development after a constitutional amendment was approved at a special general meeting of the Essequibo Cricket Board in October 2026, formally recognising Barima/Waini within its framework under the Guyana Cricket Administration Act of 2014.

The move establishes an official administrative link for cricket in the hinterland region, creating a clearer pathway for players, clubs and communities to participate in the wider Essequibo and national cricket systems.

GCB said efforts to develop cricket in Region One began in 2021, following the election of its current administration under President Bissoondyal Singh. Since then, several players from the region have progressed through the Essequibo cricket system to represent Essequibo and Guyana.

Among them is Alia Henry, who gained admission to the West Indies Under-19 cricket camp. Other emerging players include Yonette Welcome, Anastasia Valenzuela, Shenesa Thomas, Katie Blake and Darwin Joseph.

The Barima/Waini Cricket Association, chaired by Sherlon Rodrigues, has 20 affiliated clubs, providing a foundation for expanding grassroots and youth cricket.

Its executive includes Vice-Chairman Rich Skinner, Secretary Earl Doningo, Treasurer Letesha Rose Benn and Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Earl Richards.

The GCB credited Essequibo Cricket Board President Deleep Singh and both associations’ executives and clubs for advancing the integration, describing it as an important step towards a more inclusive national cricket structure.
