Doctor in custody after Corentyne man struck down moments after buying food

Dead: Ishwarnauth Bisram

A 42-year-old man was killed in a road accident along the Nigg Public Road, Corentyne, on Saturday night.
Dead is Ishwarnauth Bisram, also known as “Ajay,” of Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice.

According to police, the accident occurred at approximately 9:55pm and involved motor car PZZ 1906, driven by a 79-year-old doctor from Whim Village.

Police said Bisram was crossing the road when he allegedly walked into the path of the vehicle. The driver reportedly applied brakes but was unable to avoid the collision.

Bisram was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Speaking with Ignite News, Bisram’s sister, Sandy Bisram, said she was devastated when she arrived at the hospital and saw her brother lying unresponsive.

Sandy said her brother had reportedly stopped to purchase food from a roadside stand and was attempting to cross the road after collecting his food when he was struck.

“When I go, I already see my brother dead. I was trying to tell him, ‘Ajay, get up.’ I said, ‘Get up, get up, this can’t be truth.’ But he didn’t respond,” she recalled.

“I see his whole head, like bandaged up…. He stopped his car over the road in front of the Chinese supermarket and he was walking over to go buy the food because there is a stand in front of the Chinese, and he walk over and go buy the food, and he already buy the food, collect the food in his hand, and a turn he turn so to go and cross the road. The car hit him,” she disclosed.

She alleged that the driver failed to immediately assist her brother after the collision and expressed frustration over what she described as a lack of assistance at the scene.

The grieving sister is calling for justice.

“We want justice for our brother. The same consequences everybody face, let him go to jail because that’s a crime he commit,” she stated.

A breathalyser test conducted on the driver reportedly recorded 11 micrograms of alcohol, which is below the prescribed legal limit.

The driver remains in police custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
