A 60-year-old boat captain from New Amsterdam, Berbice, died after being crushed between two vessels during a tugboat collision on the Berbice River last Friday.
The deceased, identified as Alvin Adams, was trapped between the vessels during the collision near Jeep Landing, Kwakwani Village, Upper Berbice River, at approximately 7:40 p.m.
Police said initial investigations revealed that a barge being used to transport timber was drifting downstream due to the strong river current when a tugboat moved in to assist.
As the tugboat approached the drifting barge, the two vessels collided, and Adams, who was aboard the tugboat, became pinned between them, sustaining severe injuries.
Adams was rescued and taken to the Kwakwani Public Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor on duty and pronounced dead on arrival.
His body remains at the hospital awaiting transportation to G-Jetsco Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.
Police said investigations into the fatal marine incident are ongoing.
