Man who assaulted traffic cop with glass bottle charged, remanded

A 24-year-old man who assaulted a traffic policeman with a glass bottle during a confrontation in New Amsterdam has been charged with multiple traffic and criminal offences and remanded to prison, police said.
Keion Clarke, a mason of Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
The charges stem from an incident that was captured on video and circulated on social media. The footage purportedly shows Clarke approaching a traffic rank with a glass bottle, assaulting him and throwing the bottle while the officer was performing his lawful duties. Authorities said the incident also involved several traffic violations.
Clarke pleaded guilty to a number of traffic-related offences, including failure to wear a safety helmet, breach of insurance, failure to have front and rear identification marks, operating an uncertified motor vehicle and being an unlicensed driver.
He was fined a total of $400,000 and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on those matters. His driver’s licence was also suspended for 12 months.
He pleaded not guilty to the remaining charges, which include dangerous driving, assault causing actual bodily harm, damage to property, disorderly behaviour and resisting a peace officer. Bail was refused and he was remanded to prison.
The matter was adjourned to March 5, 2026.
