77 Cubans screened in trafficking-in-persons investigation

Police have screened 77 Cuban nationals, including men and women, during a joint exercise targeting suspected trafficking in persons (TIP) activities.
The operation took place between 22:15 on Saturday, February 7, and 00:03 on Sunday, February 8, at a building on Charlotte and Albert Streets, Georgetown.

The exercise involved ranks from the Trafficking in Persons Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department, alongside personnel from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security (C-TIP Unit).
Several of those screened reported travelling to Guyana under credit arrangements, with their travel documents retained pending repayment. These claims are part of an ongoing investigation.

The individuals were handed over to the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security for further assessment and support. Authorities said the premises were searched, but no illegal items were found, and no arrests were made.
Investigations are ongoing.
