More than 90 speeding offenders face court, arrest warrants

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) will ask the courts to issue summonses and arrest warrants for more than 90 motorists who failed to pay speeding tickets or did not appear in court.

Leading the list of outstanding offenders are Motor Zone Inc. with 77 tickets totalling GYD 577,500; Coreena Sukhu with 55 tickets amounting to GYD 412,500; and Shira Khan with 54 tickets worth GYD 405,500.

The enforcement push follows the introduction of the Automated Speed Ticketing System, launched earlier this year under the Safe Road Intelligent System (SRIS) Project in partnership with the National Data Management Authority (NDMA).

President Irfaan Ali said he was briefed by the GPF Traffic Team and expects widespread charges within 48 hours, including potential licence suspensions for repeat offenders.

Police say the automated system has generated thousands of tickets and cut speeding on major roadways. The technology uses radar sensors and high-definition cameras connected to a cloud platform to detect vehicles exceeding the speed limit.

The GPF urged motorists to check for unpaid tickets at speed.gpf.gov.gy and pay immediately to avoid court action. Arrest warrants may be issued for non-appearance, allowing the court to detain offenders and impose further penalties.

Traffic Chief, Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh, said the system is already reducing dangerous driving and is free of bias or manual interference. Tickets can be paid via the MMG app or at MMG agents.

Speeding remains the leading cause of fatal crashes in Guyana. Between Jan. 1 and June 14, 2025, the country recorded 54 fatal accidents, up 17 per cent from 46 in the same period last year, resulting in 58 deaths. Speeding accounted for 48 of the 54 crashes.
