Fitness Walk in New Amsterdam highlights mental health awareness on World Mental Health Day

In observance of World Mental Health Day, the National Psychiatric Hospital in New Amsterdam took mental wellness beyond its walls on Friday with a fitness walk aimed at promoting awareness, connection, and community support.

The walk, which began at Philadelphia Street and concluded at the hospital’s compound, brought together health workers, regional officials, and residents under the unifying message that mental health is everybody’s business.

During a ceremony at the hospital, Regional Executive Officer Narindra Persaud emphasized the importance of taking small, proactive steps to support mental wellness.
“Mental health is a big issue, we must fill the gaps and strengthen every weak area… The longer you hold it in, the worse it becomes,” he said.

Regional Health Officer Dr. Vineshri Khirodhar highlighted this year’s theme, “Access to Services,” noting its significance as the region expands mental health support. She reminded participants that challenges such as financial stress, personal loss, or family conflict can affect mental wellbeing—but that support is available.
“Being a listener to your brother and sister is the best thing you can do for someone with mental health issues. It doesn’t mean you’ll come and put them in a ward,” she said.

The event concluded in a spirit of reflection and hope, reinforcing the message that mental wellness begins with movement, connection, and care for ourselves and each other.

The walk serves as a reminder that mental health is a collective responsibility and that even small acts of attention, understanding, and support can have a meaningful impact on individuals and communities.
