The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) has advanced plans for two major road projects aimed at improving connectivity and unlocking development potential along the West Bank and West Coast of Demerara.
Chief Executive Officer Dr. Martin Pertab, accompanied by Deputy Director of Projects Intecab Indarjeet, Senior Surveyor Shabeer Ali, and other technical officers, visited the proposed alignments for the Leonora to Canal Number One highway and the Schoonord to Wales highway.
Speaking during the site visit, Dr. Pertab highlighted the potential impact of the Leonora to Canal Number One road.

“If you were to travel from Leonora to Canal Number One right now, it takes roughly 45 minutes. With this new road, we’re proposing to reduce travel time to approximately seven minutes,” he said.
Dr. Pertab noted that the project is currently in the design phase. Once finalised and approved, the CHPA will move to tendering, with construction expected to start by the end of this year.
The visit also included the proposed alignment for the Schoonord to Wales highway, which aims to enhance accessibility and support development in surrounding communities.
“It’s important that we focus on development. This alignment will enhance access to existing communities in the area and support the expansion of new housing zones,” Dr. Pertab explained.
He further noted that the second phase of the project will extend from Wales to Sand Hill, opening additional areas for housing and supporting the Government’s target of constructing 40,000 homes.
Both highways are part of CHPA’s wider strategy to improve infrastructure, expand housing opportunities, and promote sustainable community development across Guyana.
