A significant clash in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League took place over the weekend as defending champions Guyana Defence Force (GDF) faced league leaders Slingerz FC at the National Training Centre.
Slingerz, managed by former national coach Jamaal Shabazz, secured a 1-0 victory with a goal from Jamaican Kemar Beckford in the 35th minute, maintaining their unbeaten streak. This marked GDF’s third loss of the season, leaving them fourth in the standings with four wins and a draw, thereby diminishing their chances of retaining the title as Slingerz edge closer to their second Elite League championship.
In another key match, Western Tigers and the Guyana Police Force, ranked second and third respectively, clashed in a heated contest. Stephon Reynolds scored for the Tigers just before halftime, but Neron Barrow equalised for Police in the closing minutes of the second half. Despite both teams pushing for a winner, the game ended in a draw.
The Elite League features 90 matches over six months, with top teams vying for cash prizes and qualification for the CONCACAF/Caribbean Shield Championships. The champions receive $2 million, while second and third place earn $1.2 million and $800,000 respectively. The league is sponsored by Guyana Beverage Inc. and other partners.
