Twenty-six-year-old Sarah Elizabeth Shivpersaud, the mother who reportedly took her 7-year-old daughter’s life, is taken back to the scene of the incident at Fyrish Village, Corentyne, after being released on Thursday from the Port Mourant Hospital. There, she provides investigators with updated information about the incident.
Police have since sought further advice on the way forward, and a murder charge is likely to be filed as early as Monday.
Shivpersaud is accused of killing her daughter on April 5 at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Police reports state that the child dies as a result of manual strangulation, a finding later confirmed by a post-mortem examination conducted by Government Pathologist Dr. Vivakanand Brijmohan.
Authorities further allege that the woman attempts to kill her younger son, Ethan, who is one year and nine months old. The toddler survives the incident.
According to police, Shivpersaud has been experiencing emotional distress in the days leading up to the incident. Reports suggest that her husband recently leaves the home and refuses to return. It is also alleged that she has not eaten on the morning of the incident and becomes overwhelmed.
Following the alleged attack, Shivpersaud reportedly inflicts injuries on herself, including cuts to veins behind her ankles. She is subsequently admitted to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where she remains under medical supervision before being discharged on Thursday into police custody.
Assistant Commissioner and Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus confirms that the woman remains under police guard and is in stable condition. He also notes that she undergoes a psychiatric evaluation to determine her fitness to provide a statement, along with medical assessments.
Meanwhile, Ignite News reports that the accused’s mother, Lalita Brijlall, says her daughter claims she cannot remember the incident. According to Brijlall, Shivpersaud describes the experience as though “something takes over” and says she only becomes aware of the situation after waking up in custody.
