The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) and Linden Electricity Company Inc. (LECI) on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen the integration of renewable energy into Linden’s electricity network.
The agreement establishes a framework for the integration, operation and long-term performance of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the mining town.
The deal was signed by GPL Executive Management Committee Head Kesh Nandlall and LECI General Manager Avery Trim, in the presence of GUYSOL Programme Coordinator Amir Dillawar and staff from both entities.
The initiative falls under the Guyana Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Programme (GUYSOL), which aims to diversify the country’s energy mix, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and improve grid reliability.
Under the project, 15 megawatts peak (MWp) of solar PV generation and 22 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage are being developed in Linden to improve supply stability, reduce generation costs and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
The partnership highlights the importance of coordination between GPL and LECI to ensure the safe and efficient integration of renewable energy into the grid.
GPL said it remains committed to expanding sustainable energy solutions as Guyana continues its transition toward a more resilient power system.
