
Education Minister Sonia Parag has called on headteachers in Region Two to take bold, proactive action in addressing challenges such as teacher performance, student discipline and absenteeism, saying that strong leadership is key to driving results in the evolving education sector.
The minister made the call on Wednesday while addressing a meeting of headteachers at the Anna Regina Secondary School Auditorium. Present were Permanent Secretary Shanielle Hoosein-Outar, Chief Education Officer Shadram Hussain, Deputy Chief Education Officer (Technical) Dr Ritesh Tularam, and other education officials.
Held under the theme “Leading with Vision, Serving with Purpose,” the meeting provided a forum for dialogue and highlighted the ministry’s ongoing initiatives to modernise education.
Minister Parag emphasised that the future of education depends on strong, visionary leadership at the school level. She urged headteachers to lead with purpose, courage and accountability, while actively addressing challenges that affect teaching and learning.
She also highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the Guyana Digital School programme, which aims to expand access and modernise the learning environment nationwide. The minister underscored the importance of guidance and counselling programmes, moral and civic education, and effective communication, noting that leadership is demonstrated through action.
Chief Education Officer Shadram Hussain encouraged headteachers to embrace the Education Management Information System (EMIS), which will support the ministry’s move towards full digital transformation, improve efficiency and reduce administrative workload.
Regional Education Officer Shondelle Hercules called for strengthened collaboration and mutual respect among educators, while Regional Vice-Chairman Humace Oodit commended headteachers for their dedication and the critical role they play in advancing education in Region Two.
