The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Local Government Minister Priya Manickchand have agreed to strengthen cooperation to curb littering, with a focus on ensuring offenders are effectively prosecuted.

The agreement follows a recent engagement between the ministry and the Guyana Police Force, which plans to use its Smart City surveillance cameras to identify littering offenders.

Discussions centred on a coordinated national approach, including stepped-up public education, tougher enforcement and practical measures to address improper waste disposal.

The agencies also reviewed legal and enforcement mechanisms to ensure breaches are prosecuted under existing laws.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a unified approach, combining enforcement, public awareness and inter-agency collaboration to maintain a cleaner environment.
