The official launch of activities marking Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary, also known as the Diamond Jubilee, is scheduled for next Tuesday at 17:00 hrs. Government ministers met organisers at the Railway Courtyard Mall in Georgetown on Thursday to finalise plans ahead of the event.
Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Susan Rodrigues said the milestone anniversary will feature an expanded calendar of activities designed to bring together Guyanese both locally and in the diaspora. “The 60th year is a very special year. This year we have developed an annual calendar to celebrate our 60th Independence Anniversary.
It’s going to be grand. We are calling it the Homecoming… because we are inviting Guyanese from all across the world to come home to celebrate our 60th Independence Anniversary,” she said.
Rodrigues noted that the launch will also reveal additional events complementing the government’s tourism and cultural calendar. “We will be unveiling the calendar of events for the month of May, as well as some additional events for the rest of the year, especially on the tourism calendar,” she added.
The celebrations are expected to include cultural showcases, community activities, and tourism-focused events throughout the year, highlighting Guyana’s heritage and national development.
Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs said the government is working to ensure the anniversary is celebrated on a national scale.
“The 60th Jubilee Independence Celebration is something we want to be spectacular. We have partnered with the Ministry of Tourism because we also want to bring a lot of people home to experience our independence festivities and celebrations,” he said.
Several events are already planned to showcase Guyana’s history, culture, and national achievements. The official launch next Tuesday will provide the public with details of the full programme leading up to the Independence anniversary on May 26 and continuing throughout the year.
