Authorities in Region Eight have warned business owners that the illegal sale of alcohol to minors and drivers could result in fines, seizure of goods, and closure of operations.
The warning came during a meeting on Thursday led by Commander of Regional Division #8, Ravindra Stanley, which included members of the division’s administrative team and representatives from the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The commander outlined the procedures for obtaining a liquor licence and stressed that compliance with licensing laws is mandatory for all businesses selling and distributing alcohol. Proprietors were urged to regularise their operations before selling alcohol to avoid enforcement actions.
Commander Stanley highlighted the public safety risks posed by unlicensed sales and encouraged proprietors to promote safe environments for young people. He said responsible practices can help reduce youth involvement in crime.
Business owners were also urged to cooperate with law enforcement through information sharing and community engagement. Licence applications require a completed form submitted to the GRA, valid identification, a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), and proof of business registration.
