Two people were killed and several others injured in a high-speed crash on Friday evening along the Airy Hall Public Road in Mahaicony.
The deceased were identified as Nicklas Lillah, the driver of hire car HD 5859, and front-seat passenger Seerochanie Khemraj. Both were pronounced dead on arrival at Mahaicony Public Hospital.
According to initial reports, the hire car was travelling east at high speed behind a line of traffic on Huntly Public Road. The driver reportedly attempted to overtake the vehicles when his car’s left side collided with the right rear-view mirror of motor car PAN 2760.
Despite the collision, the hire car continued at high speed, losing control at a sharp left bend on Airy Hall Public Road. The vehicle struck an aluminium guard rail and then a Guyana Power and Light utility pole, leaving it extensively damaged.
Four other passengers — two teenage girls aged 14 and 17, and two boys aged 12 and 14, all from Tuchen New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo — were treated for minor injuries and admitted for observation.
Public-spirited residents assisted in removing the occupants from the wreckage.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
