Residents of East Ruimveldt are expected to see improvements to drainage, sanitation and recreational facilities following a community walkabout led by President Irfaan Ali on Thursday.
The president toured sections of the Georgetown community alongside ministers, technical officers, and residents, identifying several areas requiring intervention. Among the issues raised were poor internal drainage, sanitation challenges, and the need for upgrades to community infrastructure.
President Ali said the visit allowed officials to observe firsthand the conditions affecting residents.
“We were able to walk the community today and identify some key challenges facing the community,” he said, noting that parents in the area have been encouraging education and positive activities for their children.
Acknowledging that some issues fall under municipal authorities, the president emphasised that the government intends to play a more direct role in addressing them.
“We cannot wait any longer. We are here to work directly with the communities to address key issues,” he said.
Technical teams are expected to return to conduct assessments of the drainage network and sanitation systems. Plans are also being considered to improve housing conditions, including roof repairs for vulnerable families.
Officials are exploring the development of a designated commercial space for vendors, which would include a tarmacked area to support small businesses.
Local Government Minister Priya Manickchand said work is already being prepared to address several of the concerns raised.
“We are looking at concrete drains, rehabilitating the market and the football ground. We want to ensure your children have a clean, wholesome space,” she told residents.
Meanwhile, Junior Culture, Youth and Sport Minister Steven Jacobs noted that ongoing interventions in the community will continue to expand, particularly in support of youth and sports development.
“We want to continue that work to make this space wholesome so that when you come out in the afternoon, you feel fulfilled,” Jacobs said.
Labour and Manpower Planning Minister Keoma Griffith also announced that employment and training opportunities will be brought directly to the community.
“We will be coming to every corner, every street, every backdam, informing you of opportunities to upskill yourselves,” he said.
President Ali concluded that the government will continue engaging communities to identify problems and implement practical solutions aimed at improving living conditions.
