“From Whence We Came – The Indian Experience,” a play written by media consultant and novelist Dr. Seeta Roath, is set to premiere at the National Cultural Centre tomorrow.

The stage production transports audiences back to 1856, where unsuspecting Indian migrants—some kidnapped, some enticed, and others desperate to escape hardship or seeking a better life—are herded through the Demerara Depot in Calcutta and onto the HMS Wellesley for a perilous voyage across two oceans.

This play is the second in a series staged by co-producer Gem Mahdoo-Nascimento, who is encouraging patrons to purchase tickets directly from the box office.

“It’s based on the play Kisna – From Whence We Came: British India to British Guiana, written by Dr. Seeta Shah Roath. It features a star-studded cast. We have an assembly of over 50 performers, including tassa drummers and the Berbice Delight dance troupe,” Mahdoo-Nascimento said.

The production will also feature prominent actors, including award-winning Guyanese actress Marisa Morgan, Mark Luke, and Mark Kazim.

“The play is both historical and educational. We will be performing two public shows on Saturday, March 14, and Sunday, March 15. Sunday’s show starts at 4 p.m., offering an early opportunity for attendees. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, we have three shows scheduled for schools. I’m asking schools to get in touch with me to confirm the number of students attending,” she added.

The play highlights the grit, resilience, and cultural spirit of the Indian indentured experience—brought to life through vibrant music, dance, and the unbreakable will of Indian women fighting to survive and shape a new world.
The gala performance will also feature cocktail experiences for attendees and special invitees.
