The search for missing West Coast Berbice fisherman Ryan Roberts, 33, ended on Sunday after a body believed to be his was discovered along the foreshore at Cottage Village.
Roberts, of Bath Settlement, had been missing at sea for several days following an accident that destroyed his fishing vessel in heavy waves. The badly decomposed remains were found near the rocky sea defence along the coastline in Region Five.
The incident occurred on March 4, when Roberts and four other fishermen were about 10 miles offshore. According to boat captain Dale Yipsam, 39, of Diamond Housing Scheme, the crew had just finished retrieving nets when a massive wave struck the vessel, causing severe structural damage. Roberts, positioned at the back of the boat, was knocked overboard as part of the vessel’s side broke apart.
The remaining crew clung to an ice box overnight while battling rough seas and were rescued around 06:00 hrs on Wednesday, nearly 17 hours after the accident.
Family members and local authorities launched an extensive search for Roberts. His body was later discovered along the coastline, bringing a heartbreaking end to the rescue effort.
