A 34-year-old woman is among three persons who have been remanded to prison after being charged in connection with an armed robbery targeting a Corentyne businessman.
The accused are Samantha Thomas, a 34-year-old unemployed woman of the Bangladesh Squatting Area, Port Mourant, Corentyne; Sherlon McBean, a 20-year-old construction worker of Nurney Village, Corentyne, Berbice; and Steve Anthony Tsoi, a 21-year-old construction worker of Alness Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
Thomas and Tsoi were arrested on March 3, while McBean was arrested on March 6. The trio was later charged on March 9 with Robbery Under Arms committed against businessman Gurudat Sudhai at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice.
The charge was instituted under Section 222(c) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01 of the Laws of Guyana.
The three accused appeared on March 9 at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate M. Mathias. The charge was read to them, and they were not required to plead.
All three were remanded to prison, and the matter was adjourned to March 30, 2026.
Meanwhile, police in Regional Division #6 discovered suspected firearms and ammunition during an intelligence-led operation at Ulverston Village, Corentyne, on March 3.
According to police reports, ranks, acting on information linked to recent robberies, conducted an operation which led to the arrest of a suspect. During the exercise, officers searched an empty plot of land where they discovered a cutlass sack lodged in a tamarind tree.
Upon inspection, the sack was found to contain one 9mm pistol with four matching rounds, one AK-47 rifle with seventeen matching 7.62 rounds, and a pair of gloves. The suspect was taken into custody and escorted to the Rose Hall Town Police Station along with the firearms and ammunition, which have since been lodged as investigations continue.
One of the most alarming incidents occurred on February 28, when three masked bandits armed with high-powered firearms stormed the G. Sudhai and Son Supermarket at Lot 2B, Rose Hall Town.
Business owner Gurudat Sudhai said the gunmen entered from the backdam area carrying two AK-47 rifles and a shotgun, ordering staff and customers to lie on the ground during the ordeal, which lasted about four minutes. Sudhai recalled that his wife was dragged by her hair and forced to hand over the keys to the cashier area, as the bandits emptied the drawer before fleeing through nearby backlands.

Just days earlier, on February 25, three masked and armed men also carried out a robbery at a house in Rose Hall Town. During that incident, a security guard was assaulted, an undisclosed sum of cash was stolen, and the suspects escaped using a relative’s motor vehicle.
Victims described the attacks as swift and terrifying, noting that one of the suspects discharged a firearm before confronting persons inside the yard. Police investigations into the incidents are ongoing.
