Physical works on the new Wismar-Mackenzie Bridge in Linden, Region Ten, are 97 per cent complete, the Ministry of Public Works said following a recent site visit by subject Juan Edghill.
Edghill met with technical staff from the ministry, contractors China Railway Construction (Caribbean) Company Ltd. and GuyCo Construction Inc., and consultancy firm Politecnica during the assessment.
The team also conducted a walkthrough of the 233-metre concrete bridge, where concrete placement has reached 97 per cent.
Works on the western end of the project, including the West Watooka Connector and Dacoura Haul Roads, are 33 per cent complete. Subgrade preparation, subbase, crusher run base and curbing for the two roads are finished, while the foundation works for a roundabout are complete and curbing is 50 per cent done.
At the Burnham Drive approach, subsurface works are 38 per cent complete and curbing has reached 39 per cent, with culvert works ongoing.
The eastern end of the bridge is 27 per cent complete, including foundation and retaining structures. The contractor has installed 3,750 prefabricated vertical drains and laid geotextiles, and is placing white sand and crushed stone as part of subsurface works.
A culvert at the Washer Pond Road approach at Noitgedacht has been installed, while construction of a retaining wall for the main embankment is underway. Excavation and geotextile installation have been completed, with backfilling ongoing.
The project is expected to become fully operational by June 2026, pending completion of the connector roads.
The toll-free crossing will feature two barrier-separated pedestrian walkways, modern lighting and roundabouts on both the eastern and western sides of the bridge when completed.
