A 15-year-old mother who was stabbed multiple times last week at Heatburn Village, East Bank Berbice, remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the New Amsterdam Hospital, where she is listed as stable but under close observation.
The teen, Tiana Chapman, was attacked the previous Tuesday evening, by the 28-year-old father of her 10-month-old child. Chapman was reportedly stabbed about 25 times. The suspect has not yet been arrested and police say investigations are ongoing.
According to reports, Chapman had been visiting a friend, who is also a cousin of the suspect, when the incident occurred. A relative who had stepped out briefly to buy food returned and found the teen slumped in a chair and bleeding from multiple stab wounds before raising an alarm.
She was rushed for medical treatment and later admitted to the ICU at the New Amsterdam Hospital, where doctors continue to monitor her condition.
Chapman’s mother, Adacia Andrews, told Ignite News that her daughter’s condition has improved slightly but remains serious.
“She’s stable now. She wasn’t stable before, but she’s stable now. That’s all I could say for now because she’s in ICU and you don’t get too much time in there,” Andrews said.
Andrews said she has been visiting her daughter daily but is still trying to understand how the situation escalated.
“I don’t know what the police was doing. I didn’t hear anything from the police. I was there today and I’m going back tomorrow,” she said.
She added that when she learned her daughter was pregnant, the teen was already more than five months along and had attended welfare sessions, but the family never received follow-up information from authorities.
“They said they were going to look for the boy because it’s rape. The welfare never come back,” Andrews said, claiming that residents have reported seeing the suspect moving freely in the community.
With the suspect still at large, Andrews said the family is also concerned about security at the hospital.
“For now, we hear that he’s around the place. So I’m asking for security at the hospital because I don’t know where the young man is,” she said.
Chapman’s 10-month-old baby is currently being cared for by relatives while she remains hospitalised.
Police have since launched an investigation into the stabbing and are searching for the suspect.
