The mother of two children who drowned on Tuesday along the Melanie Damishana/Enterprise Access Road, East Coast Demerara, is urging the public to stop spreading what she described as rumours and propaganda about the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Ten-year-old Jadon De Courte and eight-year-old Tianna De Courte were found motionless in a trench on Tuesday morning. Police said the children had left home with their mother around 8:00 a.m. and were in the area when they reportedly wandered away.
According to preliminary reports, police received information at about 11:05 a.m. that two children were lying in a trench. Emergency Medical Technicians responded and pronounced both children dead at the scene. Police said no marks of violence were observed on the bodies. Investigations are ongoing.
In an emotional interview, the mother rejected claims circulating on social media that the children were wandering and invited anyone seeking clarification to speak with her directly.
“I want whoever they may be to desist from spreading propaganda. If you want to know the story, don’t be afraid. The door is open,” she said, providing her address and urging persons to stop spreading what she called “wrong rumours.”
She said her children were not in the habit of wandering and that relatives and neighbours could attest to how they were raised.
“Anybody in the neighbourhood can testify. My children are not wanderers. My children were well groomed,” she said.
The grieving mother also expressed gratitude to those who have offered support during what she described as the most painful period of her life.
“I am really, really thankful. I truly appreciate all who have come to comfort me,” she said.
