Upgrades are planned for the La Penitence Market after vendors raised concerns about conditions at the facility.
During a recent visit to the market, Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand met with vendors who highlighted a range of issues, including inadequate washroom facilities, cramped stalls, the absence of parking, flooding, a leaking roof, and low levels of economic activity.
Vendors also said many stalls inside the market remain closed for various reasons and expressed a desire to see the facility restored to the level of activity it enjoyed when it first opened decades ago.
After hearing the concerns, Minister Manickchand said improvements would be pursued as authorities explore options for upgrading the market.
“When you look at it, considering they have four hundred and something stalls and only a hundred and something occupied, with a hundred and something vending outside, it looks like everybody could fit right in here if this is restored,” she said, adding that the structure may be rehabilitated rather than demolished and rebuilt.
The minister said she would return to meet with vendors and stallholders as plans for the upgrade advance.
