Guyana’s economy a ‘roaring lion,’ says president in Republic Day address
President Irfaan Ali

President Dr. Irfaan Ali said Guyana’s economic transformation reflects the strength, confidence and maturity of the Republic, as the nation marks 56 years as a Republic.

Delivering remarks at the Republic Anniversary Flag Raising ceremony, President Ali reflected on the country’s journey since 1970, noting that the nation continues to thrive.

He described the anniversary as a moment not only of remembrance, but of renewed purpose.

President Ali pointed to Guyana’s latest growth figures, noting that the country recorded an astonishing 19.3 per cent economic expansion, underscoring that this performance was neither accidental nor temporary.

“This is not a fleeting windfall. It is the roar of a lion that has found its strength,” he said.

The Head of State further emphasised that the growth builds on five consecutive years of record-breaking economic expansion and, importantly, is broad-based. While acknowledging the role of oil and gas, President Ali stressed that non-oil sectors are powering national development.

“The non-oil economy grew by a staggering 14.3 per cent,” he noted, pointing specifically to agriculture and other traditional industries as key contributors. According to the President, this demonstrates that development is not confined to a single sector but reflects “a symphony of industry playing in perfect harmony.”

President Ali said the Republic’s strength today lies in disciplined governance, strategic investments, and a commitment to ensuring that growth translates into improved living standards for all Guyanese.

He reaffirmed that as Guyana continues its rapid transformation, the government is commitment to safeguarding sovereignty, strengthening institutions, and building a resilient, inclusive economy worthy of the Republic’s founding vision.
