Guyana marked 56 years of republican status over the weekend, celebrating the nation’s democratic foundations, cultural vibrancy, and unity. Government officials, students, and residents across the country participated in flag-raising ceremonies under the theme, “Expressing Our Culture Through Innovation and Creativity.”
Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance and the Public Service, Ashni Singh, speaking in Region Six, highlighted the vision of President Irfaan Ali, describing the country’s cultural and ethnic diversity as “our greatest strength.” He urged citizens to safeguard and nurture this diversity. “We must jealously guard and defend it…so that this beautiful diversity that is ours grows from strength to strength,” he said.

In Region Five, Education Minister Sonia Parag delivered the feature address, reflecting on the significance of Guyana becoming a cooperative republic on February 23, 1970. She said republican status underscores unity and collective responsibility: “It made us a cooperative republic…everything that we do, we should be doing it as One Guyana.”
Minister Parag also addressed the youth, emphasising their role in the country’s ongoing transformation. “Children, you are the future. Whether you want to hold that responsibility or not, you are the future of our country,” she said. “You have to decide whether you want to take the responsibility of making a mark for your country and being a part of the transformation.”
Across the country, the Golden Arrowhead was hoisted as citizens reflected on 56 years of republican status. The celebrations combined patriotic observance with cultural expression, highlighting the nation’s resilience, democratic principles, and shared commitment to building a unified and prosperous Guyana.
