Guyana has moved to modernise technical training with the launch of a new digital design laboratory at the Government Technical Institute, aimed at equipping students with skills in computer-aided design for engineering and architecture.
The Karpowership-GTI AutoCAD Technology Lab, commissioned on Thursday, replaces traditional manual drafting tools with 26 high-performance workstations equipped with computer-aided design (CAD) software, enabling students to produce detailed two-dimensional blueprints and three-dimensional models used in modern infrastructure and energy projects.
The facility was established through a partnership between the Ministry of Education and Karpowership to strengthen technical and vocational education and better align classroom training with industry needs.
Speaking at the launch, Karpowership Americas Regional Director of Commercial Operations Beyza Özdemir said the initiative forms part of the company’s support for long-term skills development.
“At Karpowership, we believe that supporting education is an important part of building sustainable communities,” she said, adding that the technology will help students develop practical skills for future careers.
Deputy Chief Education Officer (Technical) Ritesh Tularam said the laboratory would expand opportunities for students in technical fields and support national development.
“We cannot have an armchair approach to the management and preservation of this centre,” Tularam said, noting that the investment must be properly maintained to benefit future students.
The commissioning concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a tour of the facility, which officials said would serve as a hub for innovation and technical training.
