Ramadan Village 2026 opens with calls for unity and reflection
President Ali addresses the gathering

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali officially opened Ramadan Village 2026 on Sunday evening, positioning the annual event as a space for reflection, accountability, and shared humanity, rather than just a seasonal cultural attraction.

Held on the grounds of the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO), the event drew hundreds of attendees and featured Quranic recitations, Islamic songs, and community fellowship ahead of the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

Speaking under glowing lanterns, Ali emphasised personal responsibility and inclusivity. Quoting the Quran, he urged Muslims to embrace self-examination during the fasting period.“In Islam, no soul bears evil except against itself. We must hold ourselves to account before we are brought to account,” he said.

Ali also called on Guyanese of all faiths to reflect on shared spiritual practices, noting that fasting, prayer, and sacrifice are common across religions. He said Ramadan should be a time to foster humility, compassion, and national unity.

Now a signature initiative of the president, Ramadan Village is designed as an open communal space where both Muslims and non-Muslims can experience Islamic culture and spirituality. This year, more than 80 vendors will offer traditional attire, food, and educational displays.

A new addition this year is a Farmers’ Market organised by First Lady Arya Ali, with proceeds aimed at supporting vulnerable communities, reflecting Ramadan’s principle of charity, organisers said.

The village will run every weekend during Ramadan, from Friday to Sunday, 4 pm to 10 pm.
The evening concluded with fireworks over Georgetown and communal prayers, highlighting the president’s broader theme that Ramadan is both a religious observance and an opportunity for national renewal grounded in accountability, generosity, and togetherness.
