CANU Lethem raid nets suspected drugs, currency and stolen motorcycles

The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) has seized suspected drugs, uncustomed liquor, currencies, and stolen motorcycles during an intelligence-led operation in Tabatinga, Lethem.

Officers recovered multiple zip-lock bags of suspected cannabis, 65 g of pink ecstasy (MDMA), digital scales, and local and foreign currencies at premises linked to Marlon Jarvis. Four motorcycles, later confirmed stolen from Brazil, were also found.

A man, Alim Kartel, was detained and interviewed. Jarvis initially refused a search, prompting authorities to obtain a warrant from the Lethem Magistrates’ Court.

The Guyana Fire Service assisted in accessing a two-storey building and a concrete shop on the compound.

Seized items included 519 g and 1.626 kg of suspected cannabis, 65 g of suspected ecstasy, currencies totaling GYD $2,174,600, USD $572, TTD $100, GBP £45, EUR €30, BRL R$5,416, uncustomed liquor, and yellow metal. Jarvis was arrested and taken to Lethem Police Station, where all items were lodged as exhibits.

The operation was documented with officers’ body-worn cameras.
