The Ministry of Housing has dismissed several contractors as part of a zero-tolerance policy for delays in delivering homes and related services.
The government has stepped up efforts to reduce waiting times for property allocations, ownership documentation, and essential utilities.
Housing Minister Colin Croal said delays in the housing sector have largely resulted from the high volume of house and land requests, limited availability of real estate, and slow service by secondary agents involved in the process.
Historically, after a property was allocated, there was often a one-year wait before ownership documents were signed and infrastructure work commenced, as construction was tied to budgetary allocations. Croal said the ministry is now taking corrective measures to ensure allocations and ownership documentation are completed within the same year.
He added that utilities, including electricity and water, are now being coordinated to be available when citizens occupy their homes. Croal also emphasised that contractors who fail to deliver on time are dismissed, reflecting the ministry’s zero-tolerance approach.
The minister noted that the current volume of infrastructural projects represents the largest development effort in the sector’s history. He said the ministry understands citizens’ frustrations with past delays and remains committed to resolving all outstanding issues efficiently, improving delivery and citizen satisfaction.
