Forty-four individuals have been arrested, charged, and brought before the courts for engaging in illegal mining activities across Guyana, the Ministry of Natural Resources said on Thursday.
The arrests follow a series of enforcement operations that also resulted in the seizure of more than 50 pieces of mining equipment and other materials from unlicensed operations. Those convicted have been fined in accordance with the law.
Offenders were found in multiple mining districts, including Bartica and surrounding areas in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and Mahdia in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), among other locations. The ministry said several other investigations are ongoing and additional charges are expected.
Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat said the arrests demonstrate the government’s commitment to enforcing mining laws. “Those who choose to operate outside of the law will be found, prosecuted, and held accountable,” he said, noting that illegal mining threatens the environment, public safety, and the integrity of the sector.
The ministry said enforcement operations will continue nationwide, supported by monitoring, inspections, and collaboration with regulatory and law-enforcement agencies, to ensure responsible and lawful mining across the country.
