Work on Guyana’s landmark Gas-to-Energy (GTE) Project in Wales is progressing steadily and remains on track for completion by the end of 2026.
Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips visited the site to receive a detailed briefing on the project’s status. The GTE Project, overseen by the Office of the Prime Minister, is a key component of Guyana’s energy transformation strategy, aimed at providing reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity while maximising the value of the country’s natural gas resources.
The facility comprises two integrated components: a combined gas processing and Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) plant, and a power generation plant. It is designed to receive around 50 million cubic feet of gas per day from offshore production for conversion into electricity and marketable gas products.
The power generation plant will feature four SGT-800 gas turbines operating in a combined-cycle configuration, delivering approximately 300 megawatts of capacity. Built-in redundancy allows individual turbines to operate independently, ensuring continuous supply to the national grid.
Officials said all four turbines have been installed on their foundations, along with six main transformers. Steam generation work is also advancing, with foundations for four Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) completed and modules scheduled for installation by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
To date, roughly 6,400 of the total 9,300 foundation piles have been installed. Major foundations for turbines, steam generators, substations, storage tanks and fire-water systems are complete. Site preparation, drainage improvements and final grading are nearing completion.
Around 90 per cent of the project’s equipment has already been manufactured, mostly in Georgetown, with several components onsite awaiting installation after civil works are finalised.
The project currently employs about 600 workers, with labour expected to peak at roughly 1,600 by mid-2026. A recent job fair in Leonora registered approximately 400 applicants, with 10 Guyanese hired immediately and others under consideration, reflecting the government’s push for local participation.
Prime Minister Phillips was accompanied by Gas-to-Energy Task Force Head Winston Brassington and Senior Petroleum Coordinator Bobby Gossai Jr. He emphasised the government’s commitment to completing the project on schedule as it enters its most intensive construction and installation phase.
