A total of 570 fisherfolks in Region Two received one-off grants of G$150,000 on Friday, part of a nationwide initiative benefiting more than 6,996 registered fisherfolk.
The programme, announced by President Irfaan Ali, also includes the removal of taxes on essential fishing materials such as fuel and seines.
The distribution took place at the Rice Producers Bond in Anna Regina, led by Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha. He was joined by Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Madanlall Ramraj, Regional Chairman Devin Mohan, Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture Dhaneshwar Deonarine, Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit and other officials.
“This grant is such a relief! It will help me repair my boat and buy nets and other materials. It gives me hope that we can continue to provide for our families,” said boat owner Latchminie Singh.
“Fishing is not easy. This grant will allow me to focus on my work without worrying so much about costs. We feel valued and supported,” said Lall Narine, while Nalini Persaud added, “Many of us were struggling to maintain our boats and buy fuel. This assistance will make a real difference in our daily work. We are very thankful for this gesture from the government.”

Some fisherfolks said they would use the funds to expand their businesses, buy engines, repair nets, and invest in sustainable fishing practices, including cage farming. Many welcomed the government’s plans to provide affordable ice and specialised training to improve productivity and income.
Minister Mustapha said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen the fishing industry, highlighting previous support, including the 2022 distribution of more than G$1.1 billion to over 7,500 fisherfolk, upgrades to landing sites and processing facilities, and ongoing training programmes.
“This is about more than money; it is about showing that the government stands with the people, empowering communities to thrive,” he said, urging recipients to use the funds wisely.
