Tint rules set; $30,000 for breaches

29th 3rd

Starting January 1, 2026, vehicles in Guyana will be allowed to carry some level of window tint, with front side windows requiring a minimum 25 per cent Visible Light Transmission (VLT), rear side windows and rear windscreens 20 per cent, and mirrored or reflective tints prohibited.

Front windscreens may only have a six-inch visor.
Exemptions apply to the President, Prime Minister, senior officials, emergency services, diplomats, licensed security agencies, certain medical conditions, and high-risk cash-handling businesses.

Applications must be submitted to the Minister of Home Affairs, with medical exemptions requiring certification.

Fines of $30,000 will apply for non-compliance. A three-month amnesty period will allow drivers to test and adjust tints at police sites without penalty.

Minister Oneidge Walrond said the regulations aim to strengthen road safety, improve enforcement, and provide clarity and fairness for motorists.
