Police have arrested a 37-year-old businessman and seized multiple firearms and ammunition following a late-night operation by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) in Georgetown, authorities said.
The operation took place at about 2100 hrs on Saturday on Sheriff Street, where CANU officers, acting on information received, approached a parked vehicle and searched the man seated in the driver’s seat.
Officers found a Glock 17 pistol loaded with seven 9mm rounds on his person. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a Taurus pistol, an AK-47 rifle and 19 rounds of 7.62×39 ammunition. The Taurus pistol and AK-47 were not loaded.

The suspect, from Bladen Hall on the East Coast of Demerara, produced a valid licence for the Glock pistol but was unable to provide licences for the other firearms, police said.
He was arrested and remains in custody. The firearms and ammunition were handed over to police for processing as investigations continue.
