Three drivers fined $190,000; nine more summoned for dangerous driving

Three minibus drivers in Guyana were fined a total of $190,000 for dangerous driving, while nine others have been summoned to appear in court, authorities said on Wednesday.
The fines followed the introduction of illegal third-lane monitoring by the Safe Road Intelligent System (SRIS), which flagged multiple instances of dangerous driving.
Steffon Welch, of Annandale Housing Scheme, was fined $120,000 for three counts of dangerous driving; Trenton Europe, of Enmore Haslington, was fined $40,000 for one count. Both appeared at Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
Lakeram Omrow, of Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara, was fined $30,000 at Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, Number Seven.
Nine other drivers failed to appear in court and have been summoned to appear on February 13, 2026. They include Stanley Mohamed, Noel Bowen, Avery Corbin, Nyal Eustace Thom, Phillip Premnauth Mohabir, Neil Dos Santos, Martin Hunte, Daniel Van Collins, and Shane Walker.
“The era of dangerous driving going unnoticed is over,” Traffic Chief Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Singh said. “With SRIS, offences are detected, recorded, and taken before the courts. Drivers who choose to break the law should expect consequences.”
The Guyana Police Force said additional cases identified through SRIS are being prepared for court, with prosecutions to continue on a regular basis. Authorities said technology-driven enforcement aims to improve road safety and ensure all offenders face the legal consequences of dangerous driving.
