Stacy Correia, Secretary of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), expressed her excitement over the enthusiastic response from boxing gyms across Guyana in anticipation of the national championships at the National Gymnasium. She noted that the strong interest reflects the sport’s growth and the dedication of both boxers and coaches eager to compete at the national level.
This weekend will showcase Guyana’s top amateur boxing talent, promising three days of intense competition. The championships mark the GBA’s final event of the year and have generated considerable buzz within the local boxing community. Weigh-ins begin today, setting the stage for action-packed matches starting Saturday evening.
Correia also highlighted the return of Sebert Blake, a renowned 3-Star boxing coach, who is back to help the Forgotten Youth Foundation Gym prepare for the championships, enhancing the competitive landscape. She emphasised Blake’s involvement as a testament to the tournament’s significance and the seriousness with which gyms are approaching it.
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will be a key contender, having established itself as a dominant force in local amateur boxing by winning multiple titles. Correia acknowledged the GDF as the gym to beat in this tournament.
Other notable gyms participating include the Guyana Police Force, Andrew ‘Six-Head’ Lewis Boxing Gym, New Amsterdam Boxing Academy, Rose Hall Jammers, Pace and Power Gym, and Harpy Eagles. Their involvement will add depth and competitiveness across various weight categories.
Correia highlighted the GBA’s successful completion of all its statutory competitions for the year, alongside a record number of under-16 tournaments in 2025. She concluded by expressing anticipation for the upcoming competition and gratitude to all gyms for their support throughout the year.
